In October 2010, LEGO released Freeing Dobby (4736) to recreate the ending scene from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets where Harry confronts Lucius Malfoy about Tom Riddle’s diary. Harry tricks Malfoy by putting his sock in the diary and Malfoy gives Dobby the diary which in turn frees Dobby from being his slave. This set contains 73 pieces and retails for $10.99 which is $0.15/piece.
Minifigs
In this set, we get three minifigures: Harry Potter, Lucius Malfoy, and of course Dobby. Harry Potter is the same as in the one in the Hogwarts Castle (4842) set. Lucius Malfoy is also a duplicate minifig with this one being in the Diagon Alley (10217) set. Dobby is a redesign from from the 2002 version and only appears in this set. The detailing on him is spectacular compared to the previous version from the head to the torso. His accessories include Tom Riddle’s diary as well as Harry’s sock which is hidden inside the diary.
Build
The build is extremely easy to construct and there’s not much to see. It is just a small archway near the vicinity of Dumbledore’s office. There is a place to stand Malfoy on one side and a push handle on the other side. On the side of the archway, there is a place to hold a broomstick as well as spider.
The gimmick is to have Malfoy stand in the stud and have Dobby stand on the other side and push the handle to mimic Dobby saving Harry from Malfoy’s spell.
Results
Overall, Freeing Dobby is a pretty nice little set. You get a good set which is sturdy and doesn’t break apart that easily when playing with it. You also get a great minifigure with Dobby as well. Although it’s a little pricey piece-wise, I would recommend picking it up especially since the LEGO Harry Potter sets are being discontinued and the prices begin to skyrocket.
