After looking through all The LEGO Movie sets when the images became available, the ones that stood out the most were the 2-in-1 sets including the Trash Chomper (70805). This set contains 389 pieces and only retails for $29.99 which is a very impressive $0.08/piece ratio. The contents of the box include four un-numbered bags, three instruction booklets, and a small sticker sheet.
Minifigures
There are three minifigures in the set: Chef Gordon Zola, Garbage Man Grant, and Garbage Man Dan. Gordon Zola wears the standard chef outfit and the hat. He has a curly French mustache with a frightened expression. He has a pan as his accessory. His name is a pun of Chef Gordon Ramsey as well as the Italian blue cheese Gorgonzola.
Garbage Man Grant is a scruffy character. He wears a lime green safety vest with blue pants. There are some dirty stains on front and back of the torso. Grant has a full beard on his face and wears a grey cap. He has a red cup as his accessory.
Garbage Man Dan wears the same outfit as Grant. Dan has a smirky expression and wears a blue baseball cap.
Build
As mentioned before, this set is a 2-in-1 build in which you can create the flying Trash Chomper and a regular garbage truck. There are also instructions to build a Micro Manager. This version of it is designed to fly with its 3-Branch Technic axle and the trans-red dishes. It has a couple of arms to grab its victims. The wings open up to reveal four hidden flick-fire missiles.
The flying Trash Chomper is the next thing you build. This version of the vehicle was pretty intersting to create and how LEGO imagined and designed it blows my mind. The cabin of the Chomper has a very similar look as a semi truck with the blocky look and the exhausts on each side of the cabin. On each side of the Chomper are some wing cannons and the back has some garbage can exhausts with a couple of thrusters. The main feature of the vehicle is the jaws which opens and closes with the control gear on the side. Although it seems that the mouth wouldn’t be that smooth to operate, it is actually the contrary. It opens and closes pretty smoothly.
The alternate build for Trash Chomper is a standard garbage truck. The Micro Manager does not have to be disassembled for you to build the truck. It uses most of the parts from the Trash Chomper which is pretty amazing considering all the work that was put into it by the designers to achieve that feat.
The vehicle has the typical garbage truck look and you would never know that it can transform into a flying machine. Just by the looks, it is slightly larger than your standard City garbage truck but it looks good nonetheless. You have a number of recycle symbol stickers on the top and sides as well as one that says “Octan Rubbish” in the front.
The back of the garbage truck is a couple of studs wider than the rest of the vehicle. This slightly gives it an awkward look but it’s not too bad. The back gate opens up with a gear on the right side although it does not open that wide which is a shame.
Results
Overall, the Trash Chomper (70805) is a very nice looking set for both versions of the build and was fun to create. The set itself has some very good value with 389 pieces and coming in at $29.99. There are a lot of useful pieces that you can use for other vehicle builds. The minifigures are generic enough that you can easily incorporate them into your MOCs.
The flying Trash Chomper looks pretty cool and is swooshable. Many features of the garbage truck are prominent throughout the build. The mouth opens pretty wide and can even fit a minifigure inside. The alternate garbage truck build has the City-like appearance but it actually looks a bit cooler than the ones you usually get in the City sets.
There are also a downside to this set. Since it is a 2-in-1, you have to disassemble one build to build the other. Plus there was no brick seperator included but you probably have a lot already. There might be a few places where it is helpful.
The Trash Chomper is now available at most major retailers, LEGO Stores, and on Shop@Home.
