As we all know now, the new LEGO Lord of the Rings set are now available. The first one of the sets to be reviewed on The Brick Fan is Gandalf Arrives (9469). This scene details Gandalf the Grey’s arrival at the Shire and is welcomed by Frodo Baggins in The Fellowship of the Ring. This set contains 83 pieces and retails for $12.99, a $0.16/piece ratio. It contains two minifigures: Gandalf and Frodo. There is also a newly designed horse in the set. The box contains two unnumbered bags and one small instruction booklet.
Minifigs
Gandalf the Grey is the main attraction of the set because this is where he arrives and the epic adventure begins. The main color for him is, well you know, grey. He has some nice printing on the front and back of the torso. His accessories include his hat, cape, and cane. We can’t forget about his beard as well. Gandalf pretty much looks similar to Professor Dumbledore from the Harry Potter line.
For Bilbo Baggins, he looks somewhat like Elijah Wood. Of course as a Hobbit, he has the shorter legs. Suspenders are printed on both sides of the torso. He has a double-sided face, one with a happy look and the other, a worried look. The hairpiece is a new one that will be used for the Hobbits.
Build
The main play feature of the set is the horse pulled cart Gandalf rides in on. The build itself didn’t that long at all, in fact, it took me longer to take photos of the set than to make it. What’s cool about the cart is the newly updated horse. A neat feature about the horse is that it can rear it’s hind legs by snapping into place. Accessories for the cart include a couple of fireworks, a book, a letter, and a carrot for the horse. The red snake represents the firework that Merry and Pippin set off in the movie. Not much else to say about the cart. It’s a simple yet well-built.
Results
The set is a well made set that captures the scene in The Fellowship of the Ring almost perfectly. The minifigures are exclusive to this set, although Frodo will have a variant in other sets. The only knock I can give on the set is the price for what you get. The minifigs and the new horse are the main attraction. I would recommend picking it up but try to wait for a sale first.
