The first set that I purchased since being addicted to LEGO again is the LEGO Star Wars Millennium Falcon. My first impressions on just holding the box was “Wow!” The box art is pretty amazing and I especially like the blue tones LEGO used. The retail price for this set is $139.99. This set contains 1254 pieces and is recommended for ages 9-14. The box contains two instruction booklets and 15 bags that are numbered 1-6 and one unnumbered bag.

Minifigs

There are 6 minifigs included in the set including Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Han Solo, and Darth Vader. Luke has a cool 2nd face in which he has his blast shield on while he’s doing his lightsaber training. Can you see what’s missing? More on that later…

Build

The kit took me about 2 hours to build and there wasn’t that much problems building it except for applying the stickers. The first 20 steps in the book #1 just shows you how to build the base of the ship. After that, you’ll start assembling the accessories for the inside such as the hyperdrive and the dejarik board. The pieces for the engineering station in the middle are all painted on. Some good detailing on that.

After this point, you’ll start building the hull of the ship. It’s pretty much making 4 sets of 3 connected blocks that make up the exterior. I though it the pieces weren’t stable enough but they latched on pretty good. When that’s finished, the first booklet is completed. On to book 2!

On book #2, you’ll be adding more little details on the ship such as the quad laser cannon on the bottom and also flick missiles that can fire off. This is also the part where we’ll be building the top of the ship. That part doesn’t take long either. There are 12 “flaps” that hinge on the top so you can open up to see the inside.

When the top pieces are on, we’re about 90% complete now! All we need to do is add the front part of the ship, the cockpit, and the upper quad laser cannon.

Result

Let me go through the good points and bad points on this set. First, the Millennium Falcon is absolutely amazing!! The detailing on the ship is mind-blowing. Just the subtle additions such as the secret smuggling compartment and things like the dejarik board and the training remote make the set a must-buy. There is some weight on it and it feels good holding it. Obviously, it makes a great display piece!

Although, there are a lot of good things about the ship, there are also things that bug me about it. For kids, it is playable but I’d be careful with it as some pieces such as the landing gear might come off as well as the cockpit area if handled too roughly. Another thing that annoys me (maybe a personal thing) and that is all the stickers you have to put on. It took me a while to get every sticker centered because I do not like off-centered things.

Also, the cockpit is just a tad small. It bugs me a bit because it can only fit one minifig. If you recall in the movies, the cockpit is big enough form both Han and Chewbacca, but not here. You have to squeeze Chewie in if you want both minifigs to fit.

The one major thing that was missing from this set was the absence of the Stormtroopers. Why LEGO decided not to include any Stormtroopers is beyond my knowledge (cost-cutting?). This set is supposed to show the scene where Luke and Han are escaping from the Death Star with Leia and Stormtroopers were shooting at them while Vader and Obi-Wan were dueling. It is one of the major scenes in the movie and without any Stormtroopers being included, it leaves the set just a little short.

All in all, I would definitely recommend this set for any Star Wars fans as well as just LEGO fans in general. It is one of the most well-known ships from the movies and now you can have one too!
