LEGO Ideas Home Alone (21330) Review

It has taken a while but the next LEGO Ideas to be released is Home Alone (21330). Releasing on November 1, the set has 3,957 pieces and will retail for $249.99.

Box

The box is very big as it contains bags numbered to 24. Half of those bags are packaged inside an inner box that also includes the instruction booklet and two sticker sheets.

Instructions

As with all other LEGO Ideas instructions, the front of it gives a little insight on the set with some of the play features. It also gives an interview with fan designer Alex Storozhuk who’s original project hit the goal of 10,000 supporters in January 2020. There are also short experts from the LEGO designers as well.

Minifigures

There are five minifigures that are in the set, Kevin, Kate, Harry, Marv, and Marley. Kevin is in this red sweater with tan khakis. He has a double-sided head with a smile on one side and his iconic scared look on the other. He can either use the tan hairpiece or the gray beanie. He has a bowl of ice cream as an accessory.

Kate has on a brown outfit which I assume is the suit that she wears in the opening scene from the movie although the coloring is off. She has a double-sided head showing a smile on one side and a screaming expression on the other.

Harry has on a gray coat with a red shirt. He has both the security cap as well as the black beanie although he doesn’t have a separate security outfit for the cap. He has a single-sided head showing his smile with the gold tooth. His accessory is a crowbar.

Marv has on a brown outfit with an olive green shirt. His double-sided head shows him with a scheming expression on one side and an iron burnt face on the other. His accessory is also a crowbar.

Lastly, we have Marley who is in his black coat. He does have a grumpy expression on his face. He has a gray beard piece to complete his look. He does have a shovel as an accessory.

Build

The first part of the build is the Wet Bandit’s Oh-Kay Plumbing & Heating van. It has a sand-blue and gray color scheme and is six studs wide which is nice for those who build their cities to that scale. There’s nothing too interesting about it but the inside has a crate with some stolen goods. The license plate says AEK37 which could be the initials of LEGO designers Antica Bracanov, Enrique Belmonte Beixer, and Kirsten Bay Nielsen.

The McCallister House is separated into two floors which are removable. The first floor includes the living room along with the dining room on the other side. The staircase separates the two areas. The living room includes a fireplace with a Christmas tree. The tree has a couple of turtledoves which is a reference from the second movie. Towards the front is a train set with a Michael Jordan cutout riding on it.

In the dining room side, we have the dining table and some interesting looking chairs that don’t like to stand. There’s a grandfather clock that is up against the wall. In front of it is a record player with a bust that spins on top of it. In the movie, it was a mannequin but that’ll be too big for this scale.

Both the train and the record player is able to spin by turning the knob on the left side of the house. Hidden in the “basement” is a simple Technic gear system that rotates both things by just turning the knob.

The middle “section” of the first floor has the front door with a wreath hanging on it. Inside are a set of stairs that go up. Speaking of the stairs, Kevin also has a sled that he can use to slide down it.

Heading up to the second floor, there a lot more details here with three rooms packed into it. On the left is Buzz’s room that Kevin ransacks. Against the wall is a shelf that can fall over by pulling a pin on the back of the house.

Also in the room is a desk with a Duncan’s Toy Chest catalog that is a sticker. Next to the shelf is the BB gun that was used to fend off the Wet Bandits. There’s also a safe in the room which holds a heart. Above the safe is a picture of Buzz’s girlfriend.

The other side of the floor is the master bedroom that has a large bed with a nightstand next to it. In the corner is a small fireplace. There’s nothing much else going on in the room.

Outside of the bedroom is the bathroom that is complete with a sink and toilet. Some of the accessories include a stickered toothbrush and a bottle of aftershave lotion which you can recreate the screaming scene.

In the stairway area, there’s a paint can on the balcony that you can tip over. Heading up the stairs to the attic is Buzz’s tarantula that Kevin puts on Marv’s face.

The last level is Kevin’s room which is also the attic. In the middle of his room is his bed. To the right of it is a gumball machine that is very not to scale. On the other side of the bed is Kevin’s desk which has his battle plan to defeat the Wet Bandits. In the corner is a extremely large spider web.

The kitchen and basement of the house is actually a separate build that attaches to the back of the house using some pins. Here we have the washer and dryer on one side of the wall and the furnace on the opposite side. The furnace uses a light-up brick that turns on when you open up the grill.

The kitchen level is above the basement and there’s a lot that is packed into the area. The middle of the room has an island with a pizza on top. There’s a microwave next to the TV which is showing Angels with Filthy Souls. The door also has a doggy door but the booby trap here is the blowtorch right above the door and the fire to Harry’s head. Next to the sink is either a pantry or a fridge that uses a large sticker showing some post-its and brochures, one of which is a travel guide to New York, another reference to Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.

There’s another play feature here which is the vent that the iron drops down to the basement right on Marv’s face. You can activate it by turning the knob on the side and the vent opens up to drop it below.

The last part of the build is the treehouse where Kevin can zipline from his room and it works pretty well. There’s a pair of scissors inside the treehouse that Kevin uses to cut the line but in the movie, he uses a pair of hedge shears.

The front of the house has some Christmas lights dangled in the snow.

One final thing I want to mention about the McCallister house is that you can open up one side of the wall to access the inside of the house. The back side of the attic is able to open up as well to get inside Kevin’s room. This is all on top of the removable floors which gives you a lot more access to the interiors.

Results

Overall, the LEGO Ideas Home Alone (21330) is a very fun set to build and the price point of $249.99 is worth it. The complete house is fairly large and it gets even larger when you open up the walls.

There are a ton of little references that you can enjoy and my favorite is probably the rotating train and record player. I do like how LEGO used a sticker that loosely resembles Jordan and surprised that it was in the set but since companies can’t really use an image of him, we’ll see if there are any legal ramifications as a result.

If you’re building the set in December, LEGO has it done it advent calendar style so you can build one set of bags per day if you like. This is a fun way to do it but the best way is to build it while watching the movie which is what I did.
