In our final review of the LEGO Avatar sets, we now check out the Floating Mountains: Site 26 & RDA Samson (75573). The set consists of 887 pieces and retails for $99.99.
Minifigures
The set contains five minifigures, Jake Sully, Dr. Grace Augustine, Trudy Chacon, Jake Sully in his Avatar, and Norm Spellman. Human Jake Sully has on a gray tank top with some darker gray pants. At first, I thought the silhouette on his shirt was sweat but at a closer look, it’s actually the RDA Samson. He has a double-sided head with a smile on one side and the other side shows him wearing the facemask. His accessory is a yellow wheelchair that is able to fit through a door.
Grace Augustine has on a blue shirt with dual molded legs for her pants and boots. The torso also has printing of the necklace that she is seen wearing throughout the movie. She has a double-sided head showing her with a facemask on one side and a stern look on the other.
Trudy Chacon is one of the pilots for the RDA Samson and I believe this is the first LEGO minifigure for Michelle Rodriguez. She wears a white tank top and has olive green pants. Her double-sided head shows her with a smirk on one side and face paint on the other.
The Jake Sully Na’vi minifigure is different from other versions of his character in this wave. Here he has a strap that goes around the torso. The legs look to be the same as from another set. The head is also exclusive to this set with his determined expression. His accessory is a bow and arrow.
Norm Spellman is also a Na’vi and he has a brown shirt with a tan vest. The legs are plain dark tan. His head is almost the same as Jake’s expect that he has a smile. His accessory is a spear.
Build
First there is the direhorse which is the same one as in the Toruk Makto & Tree of Souls (75574). It has a combination of light blue with some darker blue on the mane, inner legs, and tail. There are two rubber pieces that connect to the Na’vi to form their bond.
Like with the other LEGO Avatar sets, there is a small section of the Pandora rainforest. Like with the other ones, there are some glow in the dark flower pieces which are contrasted by the magenta pieces.
There is a trans-clear beam that goes in the middle to simulate the floating mountains. At the top, there is a Technic pin that allows you to connect the RDA Samson to it. Since the Samson has holes for the pin on either side, you can have it displayed either way. Even though the rainforest is small, it is structurally sound enough to support the Samson.
Speaking of the RDA Samson, it looks pretty close to the one that is seen a few times in the movie. It has a mostly gray color scheme but there is a blue and white stripe going down the center. It is also decorated with some stickers of the tigers that are painted under the cockpit window.
The cockpit area is able to fit two minifigures but the windshield won’t close properly. For that, you’ll need to have one minifigure and have it leaning backwards. Each side of the window are some stud shooters for the missile launchers.
Behind the cockpit is a deceptively small passenger area where you can fit a few minifigures inside whether they are sitting or standing on the sides.
The main feature of the Samson are the twin rotors which can rotate independently of each other. The propellers can also move independently as well.
Lastly we have Site 26 which is the mobile station for the Avatar Program. This is a shrunken down version that was seen in the movie. The building sits on four pneumatic supports that don’t actually move. The building is lifted up a little and there is a wheelchair ramp for Jake.
The roof lifts up and the back wall can be removed to access the interior. There’s plenty of space inside for a few minifigures. The main detail inside is the link unit with a computer on the other side showing the brain wave activity. The link unit itself fits a minifigure inside.
Results
Overall, the LEGO Avatar Floating Mountains: Site 26 & RDA Samson (75573) is a set that captures the scene in the movie to an extent. Everything is shrunk down but there is still playability with all parts of the set, minus the rainforest. The minifigure selection is actually pretty good as some of them can be used for other things. The price of $99.99 is, however, a little too high for what you get and I would wait until there’s a discount on it.
