In my last review of the LEGO Jurassic Park 30th Anniversary sets, we check out the largest set in the wave, the Visitor Center: T. rex & Raptor Attack (76961). It has 693 pieces and retails for $129.99.
Minifigures
There are six minifigures in the set, Ellie Sattler, Alan Grant, Lex, Tim, Ray Arnold, and Henry Wu. Ellie is yet again in another set. This time, she’s only wearing a dirty blue top with the usual shorts on the legs. Her double-sided head shows her with a smirk on one side and a scared expression on the other.
Alan Grant also has on a dirty blue shirt with some clean brown pants. He has a single sided head with a smirking expression.
Lex has on a detailed blouse with some floral designs on both sides of the torso. Her double-sided head shows her with a smile on one side and a sad expression on the other.
Tim has on a striped t-shirt with a “brown” shirt over that. He also has smiling and sad expressions on his double-sided head.
Ray Arnold has a messy look to him with the unbuttoned shirt and untied tie. His double-sided head shows him with a confused look on one side and a scared look on the other.
Lastly we have Henry Wu who is in his white lab outfit. His double-sided head shows him with a smile on one side and a sinister smile on the other. I don’t remember him having that in the movie but I guess it ties in to the happenings in Jurassic World.
Build
First off, we have two dinosaurs in the set which is the Tyrannosaurus Rex and the Velociraptor. Both are specially molded with moveable arms and legs as well as movement on the heads with opening mouths.
The Visitor Center isn’t a full building but it has a facade of the front of the building with the back having notable areas inside. Around the double doors are some stickers showing the T-Rex skeleton. Below the sets of windows on both sides are some plants, possibly of some of the extinct ones that Ellie was referring to.
On to the back side of the Visitor Center, the left area is for the lab where the group meets Henry Wu and the hatching raptor. The larger desk area has a computer along with a microscope analyzing some amber. There’s also a printed translucent orange brick of the mosquito in amber. The area next to it is the raptor egg incubator with a sticker panel for Mr. DNA.
The opposite end of the Visitor Center is the Les Gigantes restaurant where all the food was laid out at including cakes, fruit, and even the Jell-O.
Between the two areas are are some semi-transparent screens with Velociraptor and Parasaurolophus graphics which are stickers.
We also have the iconic When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth banner that goes between the front door and you can drape it on the T-Rex to show that scene at the end of the movie. The banner doesn’t really drape on the T-Rex in the movie but it just falls in front of it.
Lastly we have a brick-built T-Rex skeleton that is on display. It’s pretty tiny compared to the molded one in the set.
Results
Although the LEGO Jurassic Park Visitor Center: T. rex & Raptor Attack (76961) is a decent looking set, the price of it isn’t justifiable at $129.99. The T-Rex and Velociraptor molds takes up most of the cost and there are some larger pieces for the roof areas as well. The minifigure selection is decent and the two areas are good but it just seems a bit small. I would’ve preferred a larger scale Visitor Center with an area for Nedry’s computer with the white rabbit and a command center with the surveillance screens so the Ray minifigure would have made more sense. Unless you’re a big Jurassic Park fan, I can’t see this set selling that well, even at a 30% discount.
Thank you to LEGO for sending in this set for me to review. The content above represents my own opinion and not the company. Review sets sent in does not guarantee a positive review.
