Instructions

The front of the instructions talk about the history of Spider-Man in the comics as well as the Ben Day art style which is used to inspire the background in this set. The technique uses dots on a grid and we can really see that with the green tiles.

Throughout the book, there’s also various facts about Spider-Man himself in the comics as well as parts in the build like how many red bricks you’ve used or how far along you are in the build which is after bag 8.

Build

Like with all LEGO Art sets, you build the portrait frame. It doesn’t look very stable and feels flimsy after the first two bags but that’ll all be rectified when the 10 plate sections go on later. There are two black 3×5 panel pieces at the top that double up as wall hangers. In the lower half of the frame, the middle part has a bar going through it with a ball socket which is used at the very end for Spider-Man’s head.

Bags 3-8 are for the plate sections that surround the frame, leaving the two areas in the middle. The more interesting thing about this part of the build are the section for the Ben Day technique. Even though it’s fairly boring, it’s not as boring as just putting 1×1 tiles throughout like with other sets. At least there’s some variety of parts used to break up the monotony of it. I do wonder how it would look like if it used just 1×1 tiles instead of the 2×2 ones.

Also placed strategically around the green areas are some of Spider-Man’s webs which uses some flexible hoses and ropes.

The Amazing Spider-Man logo on the bottom right corner is a printed plate.

Continuing with the build, there are a lot of blue plates and wedges for Spider-Man’s leg and backside.

In the middle has some turntables for the large shoulder section which pops in at a slight angle.

Following that, we have Spider-Man’s hands and fingers. Both of them are built over the frame to make it seem that Spider-Man is coming out of the frame. LEGO has been doing more of this with the LEGO Art sets and I really like this aspect of having a 3D illusion.

After the hands, we finally put on the head. It has a very interesting building technique to get the oval shape of the head. Underneath it are two Technic balls to socket onto the frame. This gives Spider-Man some head movement from side to side.

Lastly, we have 15 spiders to put around the frame. The number of spiders represent Amazing Fantasy #15 which is the first appearance of Spider-Man in comics. It also represents Peter Parker’s age when he got bitten by the radioactive spider.

Results

Overall the LEGO Art The Amazing Spider-Man (31209) is a very nice set that is pretty fun to build and the end result looks great. Pictures don’t really show how good it actually really is in person.

There is some repetitiveness with the round tiles for the Ben Day design but it wasn’t too bad. It does look nice with the green gradient. All the pieces that had designs on them like the plaque and the tiles for the mask were all printed.

The only thing I see discouraging fans from getting this set is the price point. At $199.99, it is the second most expensive LEGO Art set to be released right behind the World Map (31203). Usually we get an over abundance of pieces compared to the price but here, it’s pretty much even.

Thank you to LEGO for sending in this set for me to review. The content above represents my own opinion and not the company. Review sets sent in does not guarantee a positive review.
