Ayrton Senna is one of the most decorated drivers in Formula One history and the team at McLaren had one of the best runs from the late 80’s/early 90’s. LEGO is paying tribute to Senna by releasing the LEGO Icons McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna (10330) which releases on March 1. The set has 693 pieces and will retail for $79.99.
Minifigure
The set does include a minifigure of Ayrton Senna and he’s dressed in the red racing suit. The front of the suit has printing of various sponsors including Shell, Honda, and Banco Nacional. He has a double-sided head showing a determined look on one side and a smiling expression on the other. He can either use the brown hair or his signature yellow helmet. He has a trophy as an accessory.
Build
The build of McLaren is fairly straight-forward by building the chassis as well as the engine block right in the middle. It doesn’t look like much but you can tell what it is. There are some Easter eggs hidden while building and the first one comes rather quickly with the Brazil flag being the bottom part of the engine.
Next up we have the rear suspension which makes you think there’s some flex for the wheels but they’re pretty stiff.
Following that we have the side panels, which again, makes use of blue, yellow, and green plates to represent the Brazilian flag colors. We also have the Shell logos which another appearance with LEGO.
For bag 3, we work on the front wheel suspension which looks similar to the back but it has some differences to add the steering mechanism for the steering wheel. Covering it up is a 4×8 slope piece that is also partially printed. One thing to note is that the printed slope doesn’t look completely shaded white and looks pinkish instead. LEGO has know about this issue using lighter colors on darker solid colors but still hasn’t prefected the printing process yet. The rest of the parts for bag 3 are for the cockpit area. The small windscreen is printed with the Tag Heuer logo.
Continuing on to bag 4, we fill out a good part of the McLaren with lots of printed parts. This includes building the front nose cone and wings decorated with Honda, Shell, and McLaren logos. The adjustable rear wing also has the McLaren logo.
Finally, we finish up by adding the wheels which are brand new for this set. Also we have a small engine cover build that has the Powered by Honda logo. It is secured using only six studs so you can easily remove it to show the engine.
There are two smaller builds for the set which include trophy stand for Senna with a stickered tile with one of Senna’s quotes and a display stand for the McLaren. There are two pins that connect to the bottom of the McLaren on the 2×8 plates. The information on the stand is also stickered.
Results
The LEGO Icons McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna (10330) is a really good replica of the F1 car and is a nice tribute to driver. The car is very recognizable if you’re a Formula One fan and there are some nice features on it like the functional steering and removable engine cover. The angles on it are nice and the whole model makes a great display piece. The only gripes I have about it are the miscolored slope pieces.
