Starting tomorrow, LEGO will be running a new promotion with the LEGO Tribute to Jules Verne’s Books (40690) which is another set in the series acknowledging historical figures. The promotion will run from June 21-30 with purchases of $150. The set has 351 pieces and it features a set that combines some of Jules Verne’s books including Around the World in Eighty Days, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and Five Weeks in a Balloon.
Minifigure
The Jules Verne minifigure is a rather bland one but it does somewhat resemble him. He wears the same black suit from the Batman Batcave – Shadow Box (76252) and the legs are plain dark brown. The bearded head is the same as the one from Gustave Eiffel in the Eiffel’s Apartment (40579) GWP set. His accessories include a black quill pen which is a black flame piece and an envelope.
Build
The whole build is set within the pages of a book showing the three stories. The book cover is dark red and has a sand-green bookmark that goes between the pages underneath the diorama. The backside of the book is hideous with the exposed plates.
At the top of the book, we have a hot air balloon from Five Weeks in a Balloon which is gliding across a sky of clouds. This one is the least elaborate of the three books featured.
Underneath that is a wooden bridge carrying the train from Around the World in Eighty Days. The color scheme for this area works well with the brown bridge and the green train running on the black tracks.
Lastly, we have the Nautilus from Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea in the foreground. The futuristic looking submarine is half submerged in the water but is easily recognizable with its distinct shape.
In the very front, we have a sticker showing Jules Verne’s name in a script but it is not his signature.
Results
Overall the LEGO Tribute to Jules Verne’s Books (40690) is a good looking set although the Jules Verne minifigure could be a little better instead of it using rehashed parts. The price point to get it is a little high compared to previous tribute sets but that seems like the norm now for the larger gift with purchase sets.
Thank you to LEGO for sending in this set for me to review. The content above represents my own opinion and not the company. Review sets sent in does not guarantee a positive review.
