The Renegade is one of the more recognizable Blacktron sets from 1987 and LEGO has released a reimagined version in 2025 with the LEGO Icons Blacktron Renegade (10355). The set has 1,125 pieces and retails for $99.99. This is the second Classic Space set that LEGO has redone with the first being the Galaxy Explorer (10497).
Minifigures
There are three minifigures in the set which are the Blacktron spacemen. The look pretty similar to the ones for the original Blacktron theme. The torsos have printing of the spacesuit on the front and back. They also have air tanks and helmets to complete their look.
Build
Before we get to the main build, there is also a small droid that is also similar to the ones in the original sets.
As for the Renegade, it has a similar shape like before. Unlike your traditional ships, the Renegade is asymmetrical and it has a modular design. On the right side, you have the cockpit and right behind it we have bridges that connect to the body of the ship.
On the sides, there are a couple of small space speeders. They are stored on the side wings on the jumper plates. They use a trio of yellow flag pieces to make the shape of the Blacktron symbol. The minifigures can stand on the speeder but you have to move the flags for them to do so.
The back of the Renegade is the bulkiest part of the whole ship. There are two large thrusters which are lined up witih some red engine energy canisters.
Underneath the ship, there are some new landing pads that you can use. They fold in and out under the hull although it’s somewhat difficult to get out.
The other new thing about the Renegade is the middle of the ship where there is now a planet-rover drop pod. There are sticker arrows showing where the rover clips on and there’s a mechanism on the back that you push to release the rover.
The planet-rover is surprisingly 8-wide and is much larger than the original one. The front has a spot for the driver and the back has enough space for another minifigures to stand.
One of the main features of the Blacktron theme is that parts of the vehicles and ships are modular. You can mix and match various parts to make new vehicles and LEGO has changed to using clips to easily pull sections apart.
LEGO has also outdone themselves with this set by providing instructions for the Alienator which is also a nod to the 1988 set. Unfortunately, you can’t build both at the same time so you’ll have to purchase another copy of the Renegade to do that.
Results
As a fan of the Classic Space sets, I do like how LEGO is grasping that nostalgia feeling and catering to fans old and new and we’ve been eating. The LEGO Icons Blacktron Renegade (10355) is reasonably priced and is the same price as the Galaxy Explorer and I’m curious to see if LEGO continues this trend if they keep doing these classic sets.
The Renegade has a pretty cool look and, for the most part, keeps the look from the original set. There are new play features with the drop pod and the landing pads. When the rover is clipped on, you can’t really tell that it can be separated and the look is integrated with the ship. Also one of the main play features of the original set is the modular system and LEGO has kept that with this set.
Thank you to LEGO for sending in this set for me to review. The content above represents my own opinion and not the company. Review sets sent in does not guarantee a positive review.
