San Diego Comic Con 2014 came and went just like that. Four days filled with lots of things to see and do. Although I did lots of other things that wasn’t related to LEGO, I’m going to stick with the LEGO stuff in this post since this is what I’m here for.

One of the coolest things that I experienced there was not at the LEGO booth itself, but meeting people in the LEGO community. I got to finally meet Will from Hoth Bricks and Lim from neoape. It was cool to finally put a face to some of the fellow LEGO bloggers out there. I also got to reconnect with Joe Meno from BrickJournal, Tommy Williamson from BrickNerd, as well as some friends from SandLUG like Tommy and Charlie. I even ran into TT Games’ Game Director Arthur Parsons on the streets and chatted with him a little bit while waiting to cross the street.

Now on to the LEGO booth itself. It was very colorful and what we expect a LEGO booth to look like. Although the space for the booth was one of the larger ones at the convention, it didn’t feel like it. There wasn’t that much room to maneuver and if you thought you did, that was quickly over. Since San Diego Comic Con 2014 is all wrapped up, The LEGO Group is looking for input on your experience if you attended the convention. The survey guages how the LEGO booth was ran and the attendees’ overall experience. If you were like me, you probably saw some things that weren’t up to snuff during the four days there like the line filling up to purchase the exclusives before the exhibit doors even opened or how about the line switching direction after people had already lined up on the other side of the booth. If you’re from out of town attending San Diego Comic Con 2014 and want to take a little break from all the hustle and bustle of everything that is going on there, remember that San Diego does have a LEGO Store conveniently located at the Fashion Valley Mall. The MTS Trolley is right there at the mall and the Green Line runs every 10 minutes all the way down to the convention center. If you’re driving there, the address is 7007 Friars Rd, Space 965A, San Diego CA 92108.

The LEGO Store is located right next to the food court on the second level and you can’t miss it. Although, the LEGO booth at SDCC doesn’t have a Pick-A-Brick wall, the physical store does and it has a nice variety of elements that is stocked by my very good friend Genevieve. Also remember that the LEGO Creator MINI Cooper MK VII (10242) is now available for VIPs there and the LEGO Star Wars summer wave sets are also now in stock at the store. Ace from FBTB is currently at San Diego Comic Con 2014 and he has given an update on the pricing for the three LEGO exclusive sets that will be sold there. As you can see, the LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes 1966 Batmobile will go for for $50 each instead of the $40 that was previously reported. The LEGO Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy Rocket’s Warbird and the LEGO Star Wars Rebels The Ghost will both go for $40 each. There will be 1,000 sets sold in total, 200 each day including preview night. Hopefully I’ll be able to score these sets tomorrow and do a review of them after I get back home.

Ace over at FBTB has now confirmed a majority of the details on how LEGO will be giving away their exclusive minifigures at San Diego Comic Con 2014. We knew of some of the details a few days ago such as the staff using an iPad for the ticketing process and attendees entering once a day.

The giveaways start at 12:30pm in the Sails Pavilion. There will be multiple iPads stations so the you can choose which one you want to test your luck on. If you are a winner, you will be going to another line to claim whatever prize that day is for. If you’re not a winner, you can try again the next day. There will be about 1,750 of each minifigure given out each day which is a lot more than last year so your chances of winning are a lot higher. Children’s badges don’t have barcodes so you will need a parent to be there with them. Both the parent and child can enter too with the parent’s badge scanned twice.

After seeing these details, I’m even more satisfied with the changes from last year. Since there are 1,750 minifigures given away each day, everyone’s chances just got higher. People (scalpers) who put it on the aftermarket probably won’t be getting much for them and they’re probably be more affordable for people who can’t attend SDCC. So I guess all the changes is almost a win-win situation for everybody.

Our good friend, Joe Meno (BrickJournal) has stumbled upon how the exclusive LEGO minifigure giveaways will be handled at San Diego Comic Con 2014:

We also received a tip from a reader who emailed LEGO regarding the minifigure giveaway process for this year. The giveaway will take place in the same area as last year – the Pavilion Terrace outside of the Sails Pavilion, but they have made several other changes to the process to avoid the traffic congestion and complaints from last year. Instead of a ticketing process, attendees will walk up to an iPad and hit a button to enter, and they will know immediately if they are a winner. Attendees will have one chance to enter per day – badges will be scanned to prevent people getting in line twice. And like last year, a different minifigure will be given out each day, but it sounds like they won’t announce it until the end of the day, as opposed to announcing the giveaway schedule beforehand as in previous years.

So pretty much the ticketing process will be in the same area as last year, which was a pain to get to if you’re not familiar with the layout of the convention center. Yesterday, LEGO sent out some press images of some of the builds you can expect to see at San Diego Comic Con 2014. I held off on reporting it because I wanted everybody to have time and soak in all the news that went on including exclusive The Collector minifigure, the report on the Batmobile and the Ghost exclusive sets, as well as the Unikitty exclusive minifigure.

One of these LEGO builds is a statue of the Ghostbusters Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. It stands 25″ high and 19″ wide and weighs around 18lbs. Mr. Stay Puft took over 60 hours to create and is built with 2,654 bricks. It will be displayed at the LEGO booth (#2829) throughout the convention next week. The other build that you can see at the LEGO booth is the LEGO builds is the Guardians of the Galaxy Rocket Raccoon and Groot. The build is over 7 feet high and 4 feet wide. It took the builders 350 hours to design and build and consists of 28,251 bricks. You will be able to take a picture with it at the LEGO booth.

TwoMorrows Publishing and BrickJournal will be back again this year for San Diego Comic Con 2014 with a panel taking a look behind the scenes of Beyond the Brick: A LEGO Brickumentary. The panel will include Joe Meno (BrickJournal) as the moderator along with Oscar-nominated director Kief Davidson, producer Brendan Kiernan, as well as our good friend Tommy Williamson (BrickNerd). The panel will be held on Saturday, July 26th from 5-6pm in Room 23ABC. I’ll be there to take pictures and notes so for those who aren’t able to attend, you’ll at least be able to see what went on at the panel.

TwoMorrows Publishing and BrickJournal magazine present a behind the scenes look at a new LEGO documentary released at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. Moderated by Joe Meno (editor of LEGO fan magazine BrickJournal), this panel will include one of the film’s directors, Oscar-nominated Kief Davidson, producer Brendan Kiernan, and stop-motion filmmaker Tommy Williamson (www.Bricknerd.com).

In more LEGO news for San Diego Comic Con 2014, there will be some sort of exclusive signing at the LEGO booth (#2829) in the exhibit hall. There’s still no information about what kind of signing it will be or what day(s) it will be. We’ll update this post as soon as we get further information about it.
