Legends of Chima & Speedorz – New LEGO 2013 theme sets?

Word on Brickset is there’s speculation about some new LEGO themes coming in 2013. LEGO has recently registered two trademarks named Legends of Chima and Speedorz. There’s been many theories around the LEGO community of what these new themes could be and also assumptions that the Legends of Chima might be the theme replacing Ninjago. We’ll have updates on what these new themes are about as soon as we hear from LEGO.

LEGO CUUSOO UCS Sandcrawler Achieves 10000 Supporters

mb_bricks is now two for two in the LEGO CUUSOO community for projects achieving 10000 supporters. If you may remember, the Modular Western Town also accomplished this feat in May 2012. After many months of planning and building and almost a year of being on LEGO CUUSOO, the UCS Sandcrawler is the latest project to hit 10000 supporters. It will now move on to the next stage and the LEGO Jury review it in September. LEGO will now have to create a concept model and hopefully will not change it that much from the original model. One note is that LEGO does already have a licensing agreement with Lucasfilms so that won’t be much of an issue. We’ll have to see how many pieces will be needed to build the Sandcrawler and the cost of it. Maybe it can compete with the Taj Mahal (10189) to see which set can have the most pieces.

Happy 80th Birthday, LEGO!! – The LEGO Story

August 10, 2012 marks the 80th birthday of LEGO, one of the most well-known companies in the world. In 1932 at Billund, Denmark, a carpenter named Ole Kirk Christiansen had an idea to start making wooden toys. After getting his company running, he named his company LEGO, coming from the Danish phrase “leg godt” meaning “play well.” Eventually, the company became the LEGO Group and the rest is history. Below is a very well made short film of the beginnings of the LEGO Group.

LEGO CUUSOO Andy/Bugdroid the Android by Google

If you’ve used any kind of smartphone, then you’ve probably seen this little guy before. Marc Young, aka GHLTurbo, has created Andy the Android/Bugdroid and needs your help to reach 10000 supporters on LEGO CUUSOO. Word has got out to the Android world and people are showing a lot of support. As of this writing, the project has already hit 3300 supporters within three days of being submitted on CUUSOO but it needs more supporters to be considered by LEGO for review. As an Android fan myself, I would definitely buy one if the project was produced. If you like what you see, head over to LEGO CUUSOO and help Marc get 10000 supporters for the Android mascot. Below is a brief description of Andy the Android by Google:

Being a fan of Lego and Google’s Android operating system, this creation was only natural for me. I did some searching and couldn’t find any really good Android Lego builds so I decided to build one myself.

This build currently uses 205 pieces of (mostly) Lime Green bricks. Using the approximate price per brick of $0.15 puts this kit around $30. There were many compromises in this build to get it to the model stage and I estimate that given the full catalogue of Lego parts in Lime Green, the part count of the final build could be reduced by 25%.

There are several points of articulation built into this model. The head can rotate 360 degrees as well as both arms. The antennae can also

Street Fighter 2 Minifigures Rejected on LEGO CUUSOO

Street Fighter 2 minifigs - complete roster

A couple of days ago, there were some Street Fighter 2 minifigures posted by Julian Fong, aka levork, that showed up on Kotaku. The 16 minfigure project was a year and a half in the making for Julian. He submitted his project to LEGO CUUSOO to see if it could get 10000 supporters. Unfortunately, the project did not even get off the launching pad. Back in March, LEGO CUUSOO started refining projects that are submitted which means LEGO weeds out projects that are deemed inappropriate for children.

Warner Bros., The Dark Knight Rises, and LEGO

Warner Bros. has posted a press release of licensing and merchandising program for the The Dark Knight Rises which opens in theaters this weekend. There’s one part that was interesting about it.

Led by global master toy licensee Mattel, the film will also be supported by key partners such as The LEGO Group, Hallmark, Kinetix, Converse, Rubie’s Costume Company, and Titan Books, among many other licensees worldwide…The much-anticipated film is also being supported by the official partner in the construction category, LEGO, with a construction set inspired by The Dark Knight Rises;

So does this mean there will be a LEGO The Dark Knight set? Maybe. There were images of Batman, Bane, and Commissioner Gordon at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con but we were told that those minifigures were for the 2013 Super Heroes sets. If there are some new, unexpected LEGO Dark Knight Rises set(s), then that’s some awesome news. Maybe Warner Bros. and LEGO already had a plan to release a set to coincide with the movie release. Below is the official press release:

San Diego Comic-Con 2012 LEGO News Wrap Up

There were a lot of news coming out of the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con ranging from LEGO Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit to the Super Heroes theme as well as Star Wars and Ninjago.

On Day 1, the biggest news for LEGO Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit was The Unexpected Gathering (79003) set that is expected to be released this December. The set takes place in the Bag End where all the characters gathered. Again, all the minifigures seen are Gandalf, Dwalin, Bombur, Bofur, Bilbo and Balin.

For Day 2, even bigger news came out for the LEGO Super Heroes theme. First, there were the exclusive minfigure giveaways of Bizarro, Phoenix, Shazam and Venom. LEGO also showed off the new minfigures for the LEGO DC Universe line as well as the LEGO Marvel line.

Day 3 was the reveal of the LEGO Star Wars Rancor Pit set. The Jabba’s Palace set fits right on top and The Brick Show has made a picture of what the combined sets might look like. Although in theory it might look cool with them connected, it feels incomplete without the mountain.

On the final day of Comic-Con 2012, LEGO released the trailer for Ninjago Season 3.

As you can see, San Diego Comic-Con 2012 was filled with reveals for many different themes. I personally can’t wait for all the sets to come out. What are you waiting for to come out?

LEGO CUUSOO Thinking With Portals! Achieves 10000 Supporters

A week ago, I did a post describing the LEGO CUUSOO project, Thinking With Portals! by Team Jigsaw. Today, the project has achieved 10000 supporters with the help of LEGO as well as Portal fans. The project also got a push from readers of Joystiq. The project has now reached the Review phase and we wait until September 3 for the next quarterly review. Congratulations for this amazing achievement! Below is the official statement from LEGO:

Congrats on 10,000 Supporters, Brickthing and Team Jigsaw!

2012.07.13

Again, great work with this project, with presenting several viable Portal 2 product concepts, and effectively connecting with an audience that wants to see a LEGO set based on Portal 2 happen.

Congratulations on achieving 10,000 supporters. We now officially advance this project to the Review phase.

What happens now?
This project moves from the Idea stage to the Review stage. A “LEGO Jury” composed of designers, product managers, and other key team members will examine the idea. We’ll build concept models, put them in our test chamber, bake them, and determine if the concept meets our high standards for what it takes to be a LEGO product. This includes factors such as playability, safety, and fit with the LEGO brand. Every potential LEGO product goes through a process like this and must meet the same standards.

The LEGO Review Begins in September
This project qualifies for the quarterly review beginning in September, which will also include all projects that reach 10,000 between now and September 3. For more information

    LEGO My House Calculator

Have you ever wondered how many LEGO bricks are needed to construct an actual life sized house? Movoto Real Estate has a handy calculator to help curious minds see how many LEGO bricks are needed to create one. For example:

A two-story house that is 2,169 square feet — the median size of a house, according to the Census Bureau–would take 10,079,829 LEGOs to build.

This count only includes exterior walls and does not have interior walls. Furniture is also not included in the count.

If you may remember in 2009, James May, yes the same James May from Top Gear, and his team constructed a 3.3 million piece, two-storied house at Denbies Wine Estate. Although it wasn’t as fully functional as he would’ve liked, it was good enough for him to sleep there for a night. Unfortunately, plans to sell it to Legoland Windsor didn’t go through and the LEGO bricks were donated to charity.

So if you ever wanted to know an estimated amount of bricks to build a house, head over to Movoto and test out their calculator today.

New LEGO MMO Game In The Works

    Galaxy Patrol

LEGO is teaming up with Norwegian game developer, Funcom, to create a new massive multiplayer online game based on the LEGO Collectible Minifigures. This will be the second MMO for LEGO with LEGO Universe being the first. As you may remember, Universe was shut down on January 30, 2012 due to “not been able to build a satisfactory revenue model in our target group.”

There are no further details for the new MMO and the release date has not yet been announced. However, there is already much anticipation and excitement building up for the game especially for fans of the actual collectible minifigures themselves. Below is the official press release from Funcom:

Funcom signs license agreement with the LEGO Group to develop MMO game based on the hugely popular LEGO® Minifigures line of collectible play materials

Durham, USA – June 28th, 2012 – Funcom, a world leading independent developer and publisher of online games, is excited to announce that the company has signed a license agreement with the LEGO Group, one of the world’s most successful manufacturers of play materials, to develop a massively multiplayer online game based on the hugely popular LEGO® Minifigures franchise.

LEGO® Minifigures are the inhabitants of an unimaginable number of spectacular creations put together by both kids and grown-ups over the past several decades. Whether it is a knight in shining armor, a brave firefighter or just an oddball in a gorilla suit, these figures breath life into elaborately constructed cities, castles and even space stations around the world. LEGO Build with Chrome – Nyan Cat

Yesterday, I did a post of a new application from LEGO and Google called Build. My good friend Erica, from colinmorganfan.com, has created a model of Nyan Cat using Build. From what I see, it looks really amazing even though there were only limited colors for her to use. If you didn’t know it was made with LEGO bricks, you’d probably thought it was a real picture of Nyan Cat. Head over to Build today, create something, and you may get featured.

    LEGO Build With Chrome Application

Today, while listening to Damond Nollan’s podcast on Room 3026 Live, I learned about this new application by Google called Build with Chrome. Google Australia and LEGO joined up to create an app which allows users to create a virtual property with a click of your mouse. You begin with a map of Australia and New Zealand and given a 32×32 plot of land to create your masterpiece. From there, you are given 12 different bricks and plates in 10 different colors to work with. There is also a door and a window to complete your house. From my testing, your structure can be 28 brick high. Once you’ve completed your model, you can submit it and wait for it to be approved, but once you’ve committed to publishing it, you cannot change or delete it. After it’s been approved, you can see your model on the map along with many other users’ creations. If you want that particular plot of land in Sydney or Queensland, you should hurry because it is first come, first served. Start having fun today with Build with Chrome and watch your productivity go down.

LEGO Minecraft (21102) Sold Out (Updated)

    LEGO Minecraft (21102)

If you were waiting to get the new LEGO Minecraft set in the USA, you might be out of luck. Apparently, there were only 10000 sets created and won’t be any more for a long time. A reader by the name of Dennis over on Brickset received the following email from LEGO:

    Dear Dennis,

Thanks for your interest in our products.

Set#21102 CUUSOO Minecraft is sold out. There were 10,000 sets created, Dennis, and all have been sold! There are not plans to produce any more of the set. Meanwhile, we have a team of experts in Denmark whose job it is to invent new LEGO® toys every year. They spend their time trying to create new and fun toys for children of all ages. You never know though, some of the old favorites sometimes make a comeback, so keep a look out!

You might still be able to get your hands on one over in the Europe LEGO Shop@Home if you hurry. You could also find one on eBay or Amazon but at extremely high prices. Good luck!

**Update – 6/26/12** One of our readers, AlphaYoder, notes that Tim from LEGO CUUSOO gives us an update of the production run of the set.

Actually, the message Dennis received is inaccurate. We knew the LEGO Minecraft Micro World would be popular, and though we are temporarily sold out at LEGO Direct, more than 10,000 have been made, and we are planning to meet demand on this item throughout the year.

Update 2: We just got an

LEGO CUUSOO Minecraft Micro World (21102) Review

In 2009, Markus “Notch” Persson developed a sandbox building game called Minecraft. Like LEGO, in Minecraft you can build anything that you put your mind to with parts that are available to you. On December 5, 2011, Mojang submitted the project to LEGO CUUSOO. The project received overwhelming support and reached 10000 supporters in 48 hours and the rest is history. The Minecraft Mirco World set became the third project to be approved. The set contains 480 pieces and retails for $34.99, which comes out to be $0.07/piece. The box is shaped in a 12cm square box that resembles a block in the Minecraft world. The box contains six un-numbered bags, two instruction booklets, and an orange brick seperator. The beginning of the first booklet describes what Minecraft and LEGO CUUSOO is. Also, if you pre-ordered through J!NX in February 2012, you get a Creeper Inside sticker.

    LEGO Minecraft (21102)

In February of this year, J!NX partnered up with LEGO for pre-orders of the LEGO Minecraft Micro World (21102) to be shipped in the summer. As you may remember, the set was the first project to receive 10000 supporters on LEGO CUUSOO and the third overall to be produced. I received my package a couple of days ago and will be doing an in-depth review in the next couple of days. I am looking forward to building this set and to see what different combinations I can come up with. Be sure to keep an eye out to see when the review is up.

LEGO Collectible Minifigures Series 7 – Viking Woman

The first female minifigure to be reviewed for Series 7 on The Brick Fan is the Viking Woman. She is dressed in the brown outfit that we typically think of when we think of a female Viking. She also has a large skirt piece for the legs. The helmet and the hair comes as one single piece. There are two horn pieces to attach to the helmet. The minifig comes with a double-side face. One side is a happy one while the other is an angry one. The accessories included with the Viking Woman are a sword and shield. To feel for this figure, look for the large skirt piece and round shield.

LEGO CUUSOO Star Wars Dark Bucket Rejected

A few days ago, I made a post about the Star Wars Dark Bucket project achieving 10000 supporters on LEGO CUUSOO. Today, LEGO made a quick decision on rejecting the project due to it being mostly minifigures and conflicting issues with the licensing agreement with Lucasfilm. LEGO also did not accept the revised “Dark Bottle” alternative because the 10000 supporters came in support of the Dark Bucket. Although the concept was a good idea, it would’ve probably cost a little too much. Below is the official statement on LEGO CUUSOO.

Decision on Our Ability to Produce this Project

    2012.06.08

First and foremost, huge congratulations to haru for reaching 10,000 supporters on LEGO CUUSOO, and toward everyone for all of the support of the Star Wars Dark Bucket project!

LEGO Star Wars is very popular, and we’re well aware that many people want to amass large armies of Star Wars minifigures. Our team has done our due diligence, and due to our license we will not release a collection consisting almost entirely of minifigures. Since the 10,000 supporters came for this specific concept, we will not alter the project in the review. Therefore we will not consider the Star Wars Dark Bucket further for production. We’re sorry to be the bearers of this disappointing news.

The challenge with allowing IP-related projects on LEGO CUUSOO is that there is the potential of a license conflict, either with an existing license or with a competitive licensor. Still, it’s our view that it is better to be open and allow

LEGO CUUSOO Star Wars Dark Bucket Achieves 10000 Supporters

The Star Wars Dark Bucket has achieved 10000 supporters on LEGO CUUSOO for it to be reviewed and considered to be made into an official LEGO set. At first the project started off with Darth Vader and an army of 99 Stormtroopers. LEGO made a comment on Haru’s message on 5000 votes that “it will not be possible to release a set consisting solely of minifigures.” LEGO also adds, “if the Dark Bucket concept were to go further, it would need to include some significant brick-based model component to be considered a construction toy for licensing purposes.”

The project was revised and called the Star Wars Dark Bottle which consists of a Darth Vader minifigure and 16 Stormtroopers as well as brick pieces for the minifigures and to spell out the Star Wars logo. The project will now be reviewed in the September session. We can only hope for more Stormtroopers to add to our battalion. Congratulations to Haru for this accomplishment.

    LEGO CUUSOO Themed Brick Box

Have you ever took pieces from a completed set to finish a MOC? If so, then this project is worth supporting. Chris Ciafardini aka Odd.Robot has come up with the idea of Themed Brick Boxes on LEGO CUUSOO. The premise is simple. LEGO bricks that have already been manufactured are put into their particular themed tubs for builders to expand their models. Below is a description of the project:

Themed Brick Boxes would work the same way as the generic brick boxes that currently exist. The difference would lie in the unique pieces commonly found within a series, including colored bricks that fit the brand colors of the series.

This concept utilizes the licenses LEGO currently has and would only repurpose the bricks/pieces and containers that the company currently produces. Each new series can utilize this type of product.

This isn’t necessarily a brand new concept or a plea to begin a new LEGO series based on my favorite video game, movie, or cartoon franchise. This is however a solution to an issue I myself and others have come across while purchasing and playing with LEGO products.

LEGO CUUSOO Château d’Arbre Needs Our Support

A reader by the name of Matthew Copeland has asked me to review his project on LEGO CUUSOO. He has created Château d’Arbre, a castle build with a very unique design and he needs our help for it to reach 10000 supporters. From what I can see, I really like the design of it because of the fantasy/fairy tale theme of the castle. What’s neat about it is that it is a fairly small build but filled with detailing, for example, the balcony, turrets, and the patched roof tiles. Below is the description of the Château d’Arbre from Matthew and don’t forget to support and comment on his project on LEGO CUUSOO.

    The LEGO CUUSOO Review: Explained

LEGO has explained on their blog how the LEGO CUUSOO Review works. Sets that have reached the required 10000 supporters are now review quarterly in the months of March, June, September, and December by the LEGO Jury. The “Jury” is made up of many different members including the LEGO CUUSOO project team, model designer, graphic designer, and a few people from management just to name a few.

After a set has reached the review stage, there are four phases that it goes through: Brand Fit Analysis, Business Case Development and License Agreements, Model Design, and Final Review. LEGO states there are no definite timeframes because some sets are easier to review and get everything together faster than others.

In the first phase, the Brand Fit Analysis determines if a set is appropriate for LEGO and their customers. This usually takes around 2 weeks or so. If projects do not pass this stage, then it will not be looked at any further. Examples of projects that are rejected in this phase are The Winchester and Firefly Serenity.

In the Business Case Development and License Agreements phase, the Jury determines if the project is feasible financially for the company. They also get the appropriate licenses for the sets. Because this takes a while to obtain, it may take months before this phase is completed.

For the Model Design phase, the LEGO designers creates models similar to the LEGO CUUSOO project that are in review. Here LEGO considers the playability factor or “Play Promise” for the set to … Continue

He also has red pants with some detailing. His accessories include a gold spear as well as a printed shield. LEGO Collectible Minifigures Series 7 – Grandma Visitor

The Grandma Visitor minifigure is obviously Little Red Riding Hood. LEGO probably couldn’t call her that maybe because of licensing. Other than the name, everything else about her screams Little Red Riding Hood. She has a red color scheme throughout the figure. The hood is solid red which is probably the first time we’ve seen it in red. Her cape is also solid red but this one is a little smaller than the ones I’ve seen before. Since, she is a little girl, she gets the solid red legs. For Grandma Visitor’s accessory, she get a basket which is a bendy rubber piece to bring over to Grandma. You can also store a piece of food (not included) assuming that it’s small enough to fit. To search for this minifig, the short legs are a dead giveaway as she is the only one to have those legs in Series 7.

LEGO Collectible Minifigures Series 7 – Evil Knight

Another minifigure in Series 7 that I really like is the Evil Knight. This is another minifig where you would want an army of. When you first see him, you’ll notice he is mostly in black armor which comes off. The torso does not have any printing but the legs do. The knight can’t be a knight without his sword, which is a dark gray color. Another thing you’ll notice is his shield which has a boar emblem. The eyes on the knight are red which gives him a possessed kind of look. The Evil Knight fits in with the Kingdom sets very well and is one that you should definitely pick up. To feel for this minifig in the packets, the shield is a very easy indicator along with the sword.

LEGO CUUSOO Modular Western Town Achieves 10000 Supporters

The set first appeared on LEGO CUUSOO on 10/14/11 and seven months later, it now has the opportunity to become an official LEGO set. After the revisions to the standards and guidelines of what is acceptable to be an official set, it seems to be looking good for the Modular Western Town. There are no controversial content or licensing issues, and plus, LEGO already had a Western them from many years ago so initially it looks good to go. Now we wait for the LEGO Jury to review the set. Congratulations to mb_bricks for this achievement! Below is the official LEGO comment on the set.

    Congrats on 10,000 Supporters, mb_bricks!

    LEGO CUUSOO Standard Revisions

With the rejection of the Winchester from Shaun of the Dead and the Firefly Serenity sets, LEGO has revised what is acceptable as an official LEGO set on LEGO CUUSOO. Although LEGO has made sets for for teens and adults, their core audience are still mainly children. Since March 29, sets are moderated before even being posted to get supporters. LEGO Minecraft (21102) Ideas

LEGO Minecraft on Facebook has released pictures of what the LEGO Concept Lab team came up with using 6 Micro World sets. I’m looking forward to receiving my set this summer.

Here’s the contents of six sets. Each box also comes with a new-style orange Brick Separator that has a wedge to help you get all of the little 1×1 tiles apart.

Check out those extra pieces! It’s tricky to use them all in one Minecraft model. We can’t wait to see what you make with your sets once they ship this summer.

Here’s a shout-out to a few guest builders: LEGO Concept Lab designer John Henry Harris built the mountain topper where the waterfall begins, designer Mark Cowley made the floating island, and the gray well at the left is by LEGO fan Michael Thomas, one of the fans who submitted LEGO Minecraft to the LEGO CUUSOO site — where this all began!

We used the stock LEGO Minecraft Micro World set as a centerpiece, and built the rest of the model using the 6×6 modular system that you’ll get with your set! It’s easy to make your own world using this technique, and combine with your friends’ worlds to make it bigger.

LEGO CUUSOO Firefly Serenity Playset Rejected

The LEGO Jury has made a quick decision on the Firefly Serenity Playset by tbone_tbl. They have decided not to move forward with the production because it did not fit with the target consumer of LEGO products which are children. Although it was cool looking, I figured that it might not pass the review stage. Even so, congratulations to tbone_tbl for making it this far. Below is the official statement from LEGO.

**Update: A company by the name of Etadyne Industries LLC is selling the playset on their site.**

Congratulations on 10,000 supporters! Here is our decision on the IP’s fit with the LEGO brand.

    2012.05.08

First and foremost, huge congratulations to tbone_tbl for reaching 10,000 supporters on LEGO CUUSOO, and toward everyone for all of the support of the Firefly Serenity Playset project!

LEGO CUUSOO gives the opportunity for adult LEGO fans to submit product ideas. You submit some incredible things, and we’re huge fans of all of your work. This is a beautiful model and a skilled rendition of the beloved Serenity built with LEGO bricks.

When reviewing projects for production, the LEGO Jury first looks at how the concept fits the LEGO brand. We learned the IP was questionable regarding a brand fit, and since we anticipated this project reaching 10,000 the team got a head start and reviewed the project on these criteria.

LEGO produces toys for children. Therefore all LEGO products, regardless of age target, must be content-appropriate for this core audience. With this in mind we have decided that

LEGO Collectible Minifigures Series 7 – Ocean King

The Ocean King resembles Neptune from Roman mythology or Poseidon from Greek mythology. The main feature of him is his green, scaly Merman tail. His crown is attached to his white hair. He also has the same white beard as Sensei Wu from the Ninjago series. His accessory is the mighty trident which the God of the Sea is known to carry. If you have any the Atlantis set, you can possibly use the Ocean King as their deity. To locate him, feel for the bulky tail piece and the trident.

LEGO Collectible Minifigures Series 7 – Galaxy Patrol

The first of the many minifigures in Series 7 that I really wanted was the Galaxy Patrol. He looks similar to the Space Marine in the Starcraft series with the dark blue color scheme. He has a double-sided face with one side having the normal face and the other with his visor on. His accessories include a jetpack armor with the Classic Space symbol on both sides of the shoulderpads as well as blaster gun. The printing on the torso looks amazing although only the front is printed. The legs also have some printing. Overall, the Galaxy Patrol is one of the best minifigs in Series 7 and is one in the series where you would want an army of. To find this figure in the pack, you’ll find that it’s kind of bulky which is the armor piece. Confirm this by feeling for the gun as well.

LEGO CUUSOO Firefly Serenity Playset Achieves 10000 Supporters

People are really putting their support for the sets on LEGO CUUSOO. This time, the Firefly Serenity playset by tbone_tbl has achieved the 10000 supporters needed for LEGO to consider it as an official set to be made into production. The ship is based on the 2005 movie of the same name. The next step now is to wait for The LEGO Jury to review the set in June and to see if the set is viable for production. There are many factors that play into this decision such as design, niche, licensing, sales, etc. One thing to note is that, the Serenity doesn’t really fit into any existing LEGO sets so that might play a big role in determining the outcome.

LEGO CUUSOO The Legend of Zelda Achieves 10000 Supporters

In less than a week, another set has reached the 10000 supporters needed for LEGO CUUSOO to consider it for production. The latest set to get this achievement is The Legend of Zelda. We here at The Brick Fan like to congratulate Mingles for this accomplishment. Now the project will continue to the review phase in which the LEGO Jury will decide if they will decide if the set is viable set for the public. One obstacle is the licencing because The Legend of Zelda is a Nintendo product and Nintendo already has an agreement with another “building” company, K’Nex. We will see in the upcoming months if this set will pass review and be produced worldwide. This set has the potential to be the parent of other sets due to the vast world of The Legend of Zelda and the possibilities it provides.

We’ve keenly watched the support for this project from fans of the legendary video game series. You’ve made it at last, thanks to the broader community of Legend of Zelda fans. Congratulations!

Also, you built a very nice set design for the finale from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It’s a great response to our request from the comment we made for 5,000 supporters. This gives the concept some focus and something from which our team can work.

    What happens now?
This project moves from the Idea stage to the Review stage. A “LEGO Jury” composed of designers, product managers, and other key team members will examine the idea. … Continue

LEGO CUUSOO Back to the Future – DeLorean Time Machine Achieved!!

On April 28, 2012, The Back to the Future – DeLorean Time Machine set by Masashi Togami has achieved the 10,000 supporters needed for LEGO to consider it to be released as a commercial set. We here at The Brick Fan like to congratulate Masashi on a job well done! The set was put on LEGO CUUSOO on August 1, 2011 but patience has paid off. There’s still an issue with the licensing but I’m not surprised if The LEGO Group already has something set up already. Hopefully we’ll get to see this set in production in the near future. Below is the official LEGO CUUSOO statement.

    Congrats on 10,000 Supporters, m.togami!

    2012.04.29
Slow and steady wins the race. You came out in front early on with the DeLorean model and you have done it thanks to hard work and persistence. The awesome LEGO model didn’t hurt, either. Congratulations!

As we’re approaching the 30th anniversary of Back to the Future, this project could not have come at a better time. Congratulations on achieving 10,000 supporters. We now officially advance this project to the Review phase.

LEGO CUUSOO The Winchester – Shaun of the Dead Results

Even with all the support The Winchester – Shaun of the Dead had on LEGO CUUSOO, The LEGO jury has declined the set. Below is the statement LEGO gave on the LEGO CUUSOO Blog:

The LEGO Jury has completed the review of the Winchester – Shaun of the Dead project that hit 10,000 supporters on LEGO CUUSOO on March 31, 2012.

LEGO CUUSOO gives the opportunity to submit product ideas, however all LEGO products, regardless of age target, must be content appropriate for our core audience. With this in mind we have decided that – good though the model is – the film Shaun of the Dead contains content that is not appropriate for our core target audience of children ages 6-11.

Long before the Winchester received mainstream media attention, Greg (Yatkuu) contacted us in earnest to see if his project was acceptable. We recognized the potential conflict, but didn’t see a reason to remove the project. The model was presented tastefully and we thought it deserved fair consideration. With 10,000 supporters, the Winchester earned the opportunity to receive the full LEGO Review.

Greg has been a pleasure to work with throughout this process. We’re impressed by his model, grateful for his constructive approach with us, and we are sad to disappoint such a devoted LEGO fan.

We appreciate the passion exhibited for new product ideas on LEGO CUUSOO. Opening ourselves to new product suggestions invites popular ideas that don’t always fit our brand. This is the first time we’ve felt that we should turn … Continue

My first impressions of the set are that they look pretty good. I’m not sure about Iron Man’s helmet though. It looks a little too big and disproportional to the body. The other figures look great though.

**Update 3/27/12** Apparently, Toys”R”Us has removed all the pre-order links for all the sets except for Wolverine’s Chopper Showdown. I’m not sure when those links will be live again.

**Update 3/31/12** From what I’m reading, it looks like some of the sets are hitting stores already. Sets should be available beginning April 8. Be on the lookout for early releases.

**Update 4/8/12** Sets can now be purchased in many retail stores including LEGO Shop@Home.

LEGO Star Wars Imperial Shuttle (10212) Review

Around Christmas 2011, I was looking around different sites to see if there were sales going on at that time. To my delight, there was a sale on Amazon.com for the LEGO Star Wars Imperial Shuttle. Not really wanting to spend that much on a LEGO set but it was a deal that I couldn’t pass up. The set includes 2503 pieces and retails for $259.99, which is at $0.09/piece. The bricks come in many bags, and when I say many, I mean many! The bags aren’t numbered but are organized very well. I recommend a big table to spread out the pieces when assembling because there will be at least ten different piles. There are four instruction booklets included in a polybag with a cardboard backing so the booklets wouldn’t get wrinkled. The set was released in September 2010.

    Being Adult Fans of LEGO

I love LEGO. Who doesn’t love LEGO? You take little bricks and create wonders with your imagination. Growing up with the basic bricks and building crazy and colorful structures and vehicles made me happy. Now I’m all grown up and I’m proud to be an AFOL (Adult Fans of LEGO).

For the past couple of months, my love for the bricks came back again after almost two decades of dormancy. The sets that interested me on my return were the Harry Potter and especially the Star Wars sets. As a Star Wars fan, I love how the whole universe is recreated by these tiny bricks, ranging from all the vehicles and ships to the minifigs themselves. There’s also a sense of satisfaction when each set is completed and you can say to yourself “Wow!”

There are thousands if not millions of AFOL’s in the world but there’s one in particular, besides my girlfriend, that I can thank for rekindling my passion for LEGO, Chris Pirillo. I’ve been following Chris and the Lockergnome community for many years now for technology news but I also enjoy his LEGO videos as well. He has even mentioned that his LEGO videos bring in more traffic than his tech videos. Chris recently did an interview for a LEGO radio documentary on a TLDR episode discussing his experience with LEGO.

Here is also one of his many LEGO articles he’s written: http://chris.pirillo.com/i-like-lego/. Although it’s an older article, it’s a good one. Much like how the bricks themselves are timeless.

LEGO Star Wars Darth Maul Sith Infiltrator (7961) Review

For Christmas, I received the LEGO Star Wars Darth Maul’s Sith Infiltrator (7961) set as a present from my girlfriend. This set recreates the scene in Episode I: The Phantom Menace where Darth Maul was sent to capture the Queen and tracks them to Tatooine. There Qui-Gon duels the Sith apprentice before he escapes.

The Sith Infiltrator came out in June 2011 and is the third version of ship with the first two being released in 1999 and 2007. The set contains 479 pieces and retails for $69.99 which rounds out to about $0.15/piece. The pieces are packaged in 4 bags numbered 1-3 and has two instruction booklets.

LEGO Star Wars 2011 Advent Calendar Day Round Up

What can I say about the LEGO Star Wars 2011 Advent Calendar! It is a great set for the price and for the very first Star Wars Advent Calendar, you certainly get what you paid for. You get 9 minifigs, 11 different vehicles, as well as 4 objects. I really like the minifigs especially Santa Yoda and R2-Q5, which only came in the LEGO Death Star set. Most of the vehicle builds are pretty good replicas of their bigger brothers. You also get plenty of extra pieces for other builds.

For my dislikes, there were some builds that just weren’t good such as the Tie Fighter. The Mouse Droid was also a “meh” build considering you can make it using extra pieces you may have.

Overall, I’d say buy this set even though Christmas is over. You might find it on sale in the upcoming weeks as stores try to get rid of their inventory. Whether you’re a collector or someone who likes LEGO in general, this set is a must buy. The value on this set will no doubt go up as time goes by and the Santa Yoda minifig will certainly hold it’s value on it’s own. As for next years advent calendar, there are pictures circulating around the web with Darth Maul as the main focus of the set. We’ll see if that stays true or not the coming months.

LEGO Harry Potter The Knight Bus (4866) Review

One of the most well recognized vehicles in the Harry Potter universe comes from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. It is the purple triple-decker bus known as the Knight Bus. It comes with 281 pieces and is recommended for ages 7-12. Retail price on this is set is $34.99 at the LEGO Store. Nothing too spectacular with the box, the front showing off an action scene and the back showing all the things included in this set. There is also an shot of how the the levels of the bus can be taken off. More on that a little later.

LEGO Star Wars 2011 Advent Calendar Day 8 – Rebel Pilot

For Day 8 of the advent calendar, we get a nice looking Rebel Pilot minifig. After a little inspection, it appears the minifig is of Zev Senesca. It’s the same as the one in the Hoth Wampa Cave (8089)
set as well as the Rebel Trooper Battle Pack (8083). The only difference is the helmet in this set is all white compared to the other sets where it has gray markings. A very nice figure to add to your collection after a disappointing Day 7.

LEGO Star Wars 2011 Advent Calendar Day 7 – Tools Rack

On Day 7 of the LEGO Star Wars 2011 Advent Calendar, we get a simple tools rack. Yes, a tools rack. It consists of 9 pieces and it is nothing more than a hammer and a wrench in a barrel and what appears to be a bowcaster attached to the side. I must say that out of all the things in the Star Wars universe, a tools rack is just disappointing. Oh well, let’s hope Day 8 isn’t as disappointing…

LEGO Star Wars Millennium Falcon (7965) Review

The first set that I purchased since being addicted to LEGO again is the LEGO Star Wars Millennium Falcon. My first impressions on just holding the box was “Wow!” The box art is pretty amazing and I especially like the blue tones LEGO used. The retail price for this set is $139.99. This set contains 1254 pieces and is recommended for ages 9-14. The box contains two instruction booklets and 15 bags that are numbered 1-6 and one unnumbered bag.

LEGO Star Wars 2011 Advent Calendar Day 6 – Chewbacca

For Day 6 of the Star Wars Advent Calendar, we have none other than our furry friend, Chewbacca. There’s nothing much to this minifig but the normal 5 pieces you can find in other sets including the LEGO Star Wars Millennium Falcon (7965).

LEGO Star Wars 2011 Advent Calendar Day 5 – Slave I

On Day 5 we get the best item so far in the Star Wars Advent Calendar, the Slave I. It is an absolutely amazing miniset and very accurate to the movies. It takes 20 pieces to make and is a little tricky but once you look at it, you’ll go “Ohhh!!”. This one of my favorites so far and we’re only 5 days into it.

LEGO Harry Potter The Lab (30111) Review

The Lab (30111) is a LEGO Harry Potter set released as a part of The Sun newspaper promotion. I bought this set at Target for $3.99 as I was looking at the Christmas stocking stuffers. It consists of 34 pieces that also includes a spider and some other accessories. There is the usual Harry Potter minifig with his wand and in his school uniform. The main attraction is the potions cabinet. It has five different colored potion bottles that use the translucent pieces. There is also a hidden compartment that is accessed by lifting the shelves and inside there contains a letter and a horn. In conclusion, this is a pretty cool looking set that is a must-have for LEGO Harry Potter collectors.

LEGO Star Wars 2011 Advent Calendar Day 4 – OG-9 Homing Spider Droid

The OG-9 Homing Spider Droid is the item for Day 4 of the LEGO Star Wars 2011 Advent Calendar. It consists of 21 pieces in the build but LEGO does include some extra pieces in case you lose some. It’s an easy build and a very good replica of the one shown in the movie.

LEGO Star Wars 2011 Advent Calendar Day 3 – Mechno-chair

For Day 3, we have an interesting item. It is the Mechno-chair used by Viceroy Nute Gunray to communicate with Darth Sidious. The chair has 13 pieces and is pretty accurate to what we see in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

LEGO Star Wars 2011 Advent Calendar Day 2 – Nute Gunray

The item inside Day 2 is the Nute Gunray minifig. It is the exact same minifig as the one in the Separatist’s Shuttle (8036) set. Nothing too spectacular here with the typical 6 pieces.

LEGO Star Wars 2011 Advent Calendar (7958)

What a way to start off this blog with my first review than to review the LEGO Star Wars 2011 Advent Calendar. The set number is 7958 and has 266 pieces. It is recommended for ages 6-14. The retail price is $39.99 but I got it on sale at Toys R Us for $29.99. The main attractions of this set for me are the mini vehicles that are included in the set as well as Santa Yoda which is exclusive to this set. This is also the very first Star Wars advent calendar produced by LEGO.
