Barnes & Noble LEGO Architecture Studio Event

Yesterday, I attended one of the many LEGO Architecture events held in Barnes & Noble stores throughout the United States. The event was to talk about aspects of the design process in architecture as well as to promote the new LEGO Architecture Studio (21050) set.

At the event, there were a couple of guest speakers that were invited to speak to the attendees: MiraCosta College Drafting & Architecture professor, David Parker, and former Master Model Designer and fellow SandLUG member, Mariann Asanuma. She also runs the popular site, Model Building Secrets so if you want to learn some juicy secrets from a LEGO Master Model Builder, I suggest heading over there and checking the site out. Kevin, Ambassador of SandLUG, was also available to show off a few his amazing modular buildings.

There is a new LEGO Architecture set that was revealed by Flickr user, motayan, and it is the United Nations Headquarters (21018). The set contains 597 but there is no word on pricing or release date as of yet. Located in the Turtle Bay neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City, the UN Headquarters started construction in 1948 and was completed in 1952. Do you think this set is a decent representation of the actual building in New York?

LEGO Architecture BT Tower (21020) Revealed

LEGO Architecture BT Tower (21020)

The newest addition to the LEGO Architecture line has been announced and it will be the BT Tower (21020). Construction of the BT Tower was completed in 1964 and has become one of the most well-known buildings in London. Honestly, the price of the set doesn’t reflect what you get but at least you get a lot of 2×2 round bricks. Below is the official press release of the new Architecture set:

BILLUND, Denmark – LEGO® Architecture, which uses the LEGO brick to interpret the designs of iconic architecture around the world, has added another London landmark to the series – the BT Tower.

The BT Tower, formerly known as the Post Office Tower, is one of the most recognisable buildings in London. It was built to support microwave aerials.

“Every time I visit London I see the BT Tower on the horizon, so I wanted to recreate it in LEGO” says the architect and designer Eric Bedford Jr. In capturing the essence of the tower in LEGO bricks, Eric looked at the aesthetics rather than engineering, especially the use of colours, patterns and materials that define the ‘spiritual DNA’ of the building.

Construction of the Post Office Tower started in 1961 and was completed three years later. When built, it was the tallest building in London, at 189m (620ft) high. Today, it’s still a major telecommunications hub, and has a rotating restaurant at the top.

LEGO Architecture products feature well-known buildings, and the work of important architects. Aimed at inspiring future architects, engineers, designers and

LEGO Shop@Home Retiring Soon List Updated

LEGO has updated their list of “Retiring Soon” sets on Shop@Homeicon. What’s interesting is the Legend of Chima Speedorz sets are the first in the theme to go away because they just came out late 2012/early 2013. We already know that there will be another wave of Chima sets this summer but it seems a little fast to retire these so early. If you’ve been holding off getting them, I’d suggest picking them up as soon as possible.

Update from LEGO:

Just wanted to clarify that there is no mistake on the Friends and Chima items. The Friends Pets and Chima Speedorz are set to refresh on much shorter timelines than most sets.
