The LEGO Art Gotham City (76271) is the first Batman: The Animated Series set and it features a skyline of the city. It consists of 4,210 pieces and retails for $299.99.
Minifigures
Batman has variant with this TAS version which is mostly gray with black dual-molded boots. The paper cape is two-colored, black on the outside and dark blue on the inside. He has a double-sided head with a stern look on one side and an angry look on the other. The cowl is a new piece with an additional piece of plastic on the inside for the white eyes. I’m not sure if there’s something wrong with mine or if like that for every one but the cowl doesn’t fully cover the regular eyes and you can see them underneath. I believe the my copy of the cowl is miscut. His accessory is the Batarang.
Harley Quinn has on her iconic red and black jester outfit. A similar minifigure design has been used before in 2008 but this one has some updated printing on the torso and legs. Her double-sided head is red but has the white face printing printed on so it doesn’t look completely white. Her accessory is supposed to be a revolver with a cork.
Joker has on his purple suit with the acid flower. His double-sided head shows him with a smirk on one side and an evil smile on the other. The head doesn’t seem to fit the TAS Joker as he doesn’t have the wide mouth grin and he sort of looks like Jared Leto’s Joker from Suicide Squad. His accessory is a stick of dynamite.
Lastly we have Catwoman who dons her gray suit with the yellow belt. What’s off about her is that she has full black arms but in reality, her gloves don’t go all the way up. She has a single-sided head also printed on like Harley but has a better print job. Her accessory is her whip.
Build
As with all the LEGO Art sets, the build is separated into 15 panels and what’s interesting about this is that the panels have references of various episodes from the series as the instructions give you the episode names. The panels are connected together meticulously and are usually secured by the various skyline buildings. Although the buildings use similar techniques to create them, they aren’t repetitive.
In some of the buildings, there are additional Easter eggs hidden underneath. Honestly unless you reference the instructions, it may be a little difficult to find which buildings actually things inside. I made the mistake of pulling something off unintentionally thinking there was something there but there’s not.
These Easter eggs use a lot of the stickers on the second sheet which shows some of the secondary chararcters of Gotham. This is little disappointing because the space could’ve been used for some microbuilds but the way the buildings are constructed, there wouldn’t have been any room for them. Some of the other stickers are used for the building names and marquee signs.
There’s also the printed Bat-Signal dish piece which is has an off-yellow color because it’s printed on a black dish. Again this problam has plagued LEGO for a while now and they still really haven’t figured out a solution for it. Also in the air are some of the very recognizable police blimps shining the search lights and the Batwing.
At the top of the frame you have the Batman sign designed with the font used for the show. Since it’s not a normal font, the way that it was designed looks great given the distinct angles of the letters.
Like with all the LEGO Art sets, you are able to mount the whole set on a wall. The back of the build has a couple of wall mount pieces but I wouldn’t trust them with a set this size. Luckily, you can also display the set on a table by using the Technic beams at the bottom which can easily fold in or out.
Lastly for the minifigures, there’s the gargoyle display stand for them that we’ve seen before.
Results
The LEGO Art Gotham City (76271) is a very nice looking set and there are a ton of Easter eggs hidden throughout, so much that I pulled off things that I shouldn’t have believing that there was something there. I do like the look of the different buildings and style that looks like it’s from the animated series.
The minifigure selection is okay but could’ve been way better. It would’ve been nice to get some minifigures of some of the characters on the stickers instead of the usual cast that we have. It has been rumored that we’ll be getting more Batman TAS sets later this year so fingers crossed.
Obviously, you’ll need a large space dedicated to display it but it does make a beautiful backdrop wherever it is. For the price of $ 299.99, I feel that you do get a good building experience and makes a nice display piece.
