There to mark the special occasion was Mayor of Billund Municipality, Stephanie Storbank, Chief Executive Officer of the LEGO Group, Niels B. Christiansen, and Chief Operations Officer, Carsten Rasmussen.
Carsten Rasmussen says: “Today, we are one step closer to opening another state-of-the-art campus in Billund with focus on sustainability, technology and an inspiring and playful workplace for our employees. We are investing significantly in our headquarters these years, and I’m excited that we are also able to contribute to the development of Billund.”
Innovative working environment with learning through play at its heart
In recent years, the LEGO Group’s activities and number of employees in Billund have increased significantly. Now, the around 1,900 employees out of the nearly 6,000 in Billund will come together to enjoy the new office spaces, laboratories, test facilities, tool shops, and moulding areas.“Our employees can look forward to a playful and creative working environment that fosters collaboration, creativity and innovation. This will be the perfect environment for our teams to continue to inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow for many years to come,” Carsten Rasmussen adds.
What is more, the new facilities will benefit not only employees – there will also be a dedicated Sustainability Experience & Playroom where school children, among others, can visit to learn about sustainability through play. The LEGO Group will also create a surrounding park that will be open to the public.
Minimising environmental impact
The construction will focus on reducing the environmental impact to a minimum. The goal is to have the new building certified as LEED Platinum, the highest possible environmental ranking within the widely recognised green building rating system.“We are designing the building to meet the absolute highest standards within ‘green building’ practice. This will be yet another important step on our journey to reduce our CO2 impact and become operationally carbon neutral,” Carsten Rasmussen says.
To this end, the LEGO Group will apply steel and concrete with a lower carbon footprint for the construction, and office spaces will use FSC certified timber as the load bearing structure.
In addition, optimising energy and reducing water consumption will also be a focus that will be achieved through energy efficient installations, intelligent interior lighting, and rainwater management through green roofs and well-thought-out landscape features.
The building is set to be inaugurated in 2025.
