In June, LEGO will be releasing a new wave of LEGO Jurassic Park sets to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the movie and the first one we’ll be checking out is the Dilophosaurus Ambush (76958). It is one of the smaller sets in the wave coming in at 211 pieces and retails for $19.99.
Minifigure
There is only one minifigure in the set and it is of Dennis Nedry. Although he’s had a few outfits in the movie, this version is the more iconic one with him in the yellow jacket. Underneath that is a blue shirt with his badge. His double-sided head shows him scared expression on one side and the other shows him screaming with the Dilophosaurus venom all over his face.
Build
The set comes with a new Dilophosaurus. The mold is the same as the previous ones with the expanded frill but this one has the classic darker green color scheme. The mouth does open and close.
The main part of the build is the Jeep Wrangler – Jeep 12. It has a gray and tan color scheme with some red highlights throughout. The front of the jeep has a sticker for the JP 12 license plate. The hood also has a sticker for the JP 12 designation. The grill, however, is a printed piece.
On the doors of the jeep, there’s more of the Jeep 12 signs as well as the Jurassic Park logo. The step bars are also stickers with some muddy footprints.
The canvas top can be removed to put Nedry inside but the main negative here is that the jeep is not big enough to fit the Dilophosaurus inside to recreate Nedry’s death scene.
The back of the jeep has the same license plate as in the front and there’s a spare wheel.
The other part of the build is a little section of the jungle showing the East Dock sign that the jeep can knock over. The arrow is connected on a pin so it can spin freely. On the ground, there’s a licensed Barbasol can piece along with a white frog. I’m not sure if the designers used the frog as symbolism for the frog DNA that was used to fill in the gene sequence gaps.
Results
Overall the LEGO Jurassic Park Dilophosaurus Ambush (76958) is a pretty good set for $20. You get one of the more memorable scenes from the movie including the venom to Nedry’s face. The only downside is that you can’t fit the Dilophosaurus into the jeep to fully recreate that scene.
Thank you to LEGO for sending in this set for me to review. The content above represents my own opinion and not the company. Review sets sent in does not guarantee a positive review.
