Continuing on with my reviews of the LEGO Jurassic Park 30th anniversary sets, we take a look at the smallest set in the wave with the Velociraptor Escape (76957). It is a 4+ set coming in at 137 pieces and retailing for $39.99.
Minifigures
There are two minifigures in the set, Ellie Sattler and Robert Muldoon. This version Ellie is similar to the one in the Triceratops Research (75959) but with some slight differences. The pink top is more cleaner look here and she has on the same legs with the khaki shorts. Her double-sided head shows her with a stern look on one side and a smile on the other. She has a radio as an accessory.
“They should all be destroyed.” Robert Muldoon has on the white shirt with the tan vest. He has some white shorts to complete his look. He only has a single-sided head because he wears a hat and it shows him with an angry look. His accessory is a tranquilizer gun.
Build
The set does come with a Velociraptor. It has movement on the arms and legs. The head can only turn left and right and the mouth opens.
The main part of the build features the Velociraptor Pen from the beginning part of the film after everyone arrives to the island. The tower has two stories with the upper part having a control panel. On the side, there’s a feeding bucket with a winch to lower it down. At the top of the tower, there’s a nice printed 2×2 tile of the Jurassic Park logo.
Underneath the tower, there’s a gate that opens up by pulling up on the lever. The opening has enough room for the off-roader to go in.
The outside part of the pen has some dinosaur poop. I’m not sure what LEGO’s fascination with dino poop but they sure like to throw it in these sets.
There’s an open area for the raptor and is surrounded by an electrified fence. Part of the fence is is on a hinge so it can swing in various directions. Note that the electricity sign is a printed 2×2 tile. The other part of the fence can be knocked down so simulate the raptor breaking out. In the corner of the fences, there’s a green frog.
Lastly, there are some smaller builds including a nest area with a hatching raptor egg as well as an off-roader in the Jurassic Park colors. For some reason, there’s a hot dog in the back, possibly to lure the raptor.
Results
If you know anything about 4+ sets, you would know they are always overpriced and the LEGO Jurassic Park Velociraptor Escape (76957) is no exception. I can see that they are geared towards the younger builders who are transitioning from DUPLO to system sets but I don’t see anything in this set that justifies the price of $40. You do get some exclusive minifigures but the raptor is also in the Visitor Center: T. rex & Raptor Attack (76961) so I guess it’s a cheaper way to get it. The build aren’t too interesting but there are some play features with the gates and the feeding bucket along with the off-roader. I would stay away from this set at this price point and if you’re just collecting the minifigures, I would suggest going the secondary market route.
Thank you to LEGO for sending in this set for me to review. The content above represents my own opinion and not the company. Review sets sent in does not guarantee a positive review.
