LEGO has recently been making character builds of smaller Marvel characters such as I am Groot (76217) and Venomized Groot (76249) and their latest addition to the lineup is Rocket & Baby Groot (76282). The set has 566 pieces and retails for $59.99.
Minifigure
The set does include an exclusive Baby Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 where it is wearing the red outfit.
Build
The build starts off with Rocket’s torso which has a slim profile if you’re looking at it from the side. The top of the torso has some shoulderpads on hinges that doesn’t hinder movement on the arms too much. The blue armor uses sloped tiles to give its shape. The belt has some stickers for the details.
The arms are on ball joints as well as the wrists. The elbows uses just wedge plates so they don’t have any movement at all. The fingers use some teeth pieces and the palm of the hands have clips so he can “hold” the weapons securely. The forearms look a bit too thin and it looks awkward to me.
The waist uses a click pin so it can turn a full 360 degrees but also has some ridgidness so it can stay in position. The belt has a couple of pouches which are also detailed with stickers.
Both legs are on click joints so you do get a decent amount of poseability. The feet are on ball joints and you can have some ankle rockers. The toes also have articulation using clips.
The tail is secured on the back using a pin and it is made up of two different colored baskets stacked up with a bush at the end. I don’t really like the look of it.
The head which is probably the most controversial part of the whole set. Let’s just get it out of the way, it looks scary. It uses a number of claw pieces for the fur on the sides of the head along with some printed pieces for additional fur details. Curved and slope pieces give the eye area the basic structure if its face. The eyes are printed slide shoe pieces and its like you’re looking into its soul. The lower mouth is connected using clips and can open pretty wide.
Lastly Rocket has a couple of brick-built weapons, one for each hand. He doesn’t actully “hold’ them using the fingers but they are clipped on and covered with the fingers so you get the illusion of him holding them. One of the blasters uses a spring-loaded missile but I’m not sure why only one blaster uses this feature instead of both.
Results
Overall, I feel the LEGO Marvel Rocket & Baby Groot (76282) isn’t a too good of a set. For one, it just looks scary, especially with that head. The proportions also seems off in various areas like the arms and tail with the arms being way too skinny while the tail is just ugly. You can get a decent amount of poseability but I feel this is where the positives end for this set. Unless you’re a big Guardians of the Galaxy, I see this set sitting on the shelves waiting for the clearance sale.
Thank you to LEGO for sending in this set for me to review. The content above represents my own opinion and not the company. Review sets sent in does not guarantee a positive review.
