The new LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man 3 sets have recently been released for sale in conjunction with the premiere of the Iron Man 3 movie in May and I’ve picked up all of them to be reviewed in the near future. The first set to be reviewed is the Iron Man: Extremis Sea Port Battle (76006). This set has 195 pieces and retails for $19.99, a $0.10/piece ratio. The box contains two numbered bags, an instruction booklet, a comic book, and a small sticker sheet.
Minifigures
There are three minifigures in the Extremis Sea Port Battle: Iron Man in Mark 42 (MK XLII) armor, War Machine, and Aldrich Killian. Iron Man’s color scheme is red and gold and is a preview of the armor that Tony Stark will be wearing in the movie if you haven’t seen the movie trailer yet. The helmet is the same as last year’s version. The main difference is there are more gold printing on the torso and legs. Tony has a double-sided head with a confident expression on one side and a scared expression on the other. Iron Man also has transparent blue studs and round bricks to represent flames. This version of the armor will also be in the Malibu Mansion Attack (76007) set.
War Machine finally makes his appearance in LEGO form! He has a dark and light grey color scheme that looks really good. *Spoiler alert* The arc reactor printing on his chest is rectangular and is similar to the one on the Iron Patriot suit which probably means that the War Machine suit will be upgraded sometime in the movie. The helmet is the same mold as Iron Man’s except for the coloring. The suit also comes with a shoulder cannon to complete the War Machine look. James “Rhodey” Rhodes has a double-sided head with a stern and an angry expressions. Like Iron Man, he also has some translucent studs and bricks to show flames from the thrusters.
The last minifigure in the set is Aldrich Killian, the doctor that created the Extremis virus. He wears a tan suit and pants with a dark green shirt. He has a double-sided head that is glow-in-the-dark. One side shows Killian with a stern look while the other shows him with an angry expression and him stricken with the Extremis virus. He has a gun as an accessory.
Build
There are two parts to the set build, the speedboat and the buoy. The boat has a green, yellow, and black color scheme and has a very sleek look to it which works very well overall. There are also a couple of neat features with the boat. One is the windshield that is angled back to keep up with the sleek look. LEGO has been using very nice techniques lately to make windshields have a cooler look. The other feature that I like with the speedboat is the two flick-fire missiles that are included. You don’t actually flick the missiles but there are levers you pull down to shoot the missiles. There’s also a hidden part in front of the ship where Aldrich Killian can hide in. On the top of the boat is a sticker that shows the Ten Rings symbol.
The final part of the set is the red buoy. It sits on a couple of blue pieces that represent the water. The buoy blows up when you press on either side of the grey plate piece. A little detail for the buoy there is a sticker that shows “JC82” which shows the initials of the creator of the set.
Results
Overall, I really dig the Iron Man Extremis Sea Port Battle set. There’s been a few decent sets this year that are priced at $19.99 and this set is not an exception. The minifigures included are very nice especially the long-awaited War Machine. The speedboat looks pretty good after it’s been completed. The buoy though doesn’t do anything for me but more of a piece count filler.
