We’re almost done with our reviews of the new wave of LEGO Monkie Kid sets and the next one we’ll be checking out is the Monkie Kid’s Team Dronecopter (80023). It has 1,462 piece and retails for $149.99 and it comes packed in bags numbered to 14.
Minifigures
The set comes with eight minifigures of Monkie Kid, Mei, Mr. Tang, Fei, Red Son, Spider Queen, Huntsman, Syntax, and a bigfig of Sandy. Monkie Kid has on the newer jacket with the Monkey King face on the front and the sky symbol on the back. There is also a teal hoodie that goes around the back. He has a double-sided head showing an angry face on one side and a relaxed expression on the other. His accessory is the Golden Staff.
Mei has on her new White Dragon Horse suit that shows some pearl-gold printing of the dragon on the front. The legs have some of the scales going down it. There is also some shoulder armor that goes on the neck area. Her double-sided head shows her with the HUD on one side and a winky face on the other. I will say that this expression is growing on me every time I see it. Her printed helmet completes her look. Her accessory is the Dragon Blade.
Mr. Tang is a brand new minifigure for the theme but he’s been in the show since the first episode. He wears a red and white tunic with the detailing going down the legs. He also has a red scarf that completes his look. He has a double-sided head showing a smirk on one side and a yawning/singing expression on the other. His accessory is a book of the Journey to the West. The cover is a sticker while the page is printed.
Fei is a regular citizen that wears a green jacket over a white shirt. She has a double-sided head with a somber look on one side and a scared look on the other. Her accessory is a hotdog.
Red Son makes an appearance in this set and he has on an updated outfit which has printing of a harness on the front with the larger piece going on the back. The pants are purple with some armor on the knees and toes. The harness has some arms on the top and the bottom has some jet packs. He also has some flame fists as accessories.
Following that, we have the Spider Queen which we’ve seen plenty of times if you’ve been reading my reviews. The torso shows the spider logo on the front and some armor on the back. The dress piece has a huge web going down it. The cape she wears is made of a plastic material. Her double-sided head shows her with an evil smile on one side and some armor over her mouth on the other. Her accessory is a sword.
The Huntsman is the same minifigure as the other sets from this wave. He has on a furry outfit that extends to the collar piece around the neck. His accessory is some sort of venom blaster.
Syntax also makes an appearance in the set. He wears the black and purple lab coat with neon green accents. There’s printing on the front showing his ID card around the neck. He wears a four arm harness that holds all kinds of accessories such as a fire hydrant, hammer, and a venom blaster. His double-sided head shows him with an evil smile on one side and some armor around the mouth on the other. There are some goggles that are molded to the hair.
Sandy is a bigfig which is the same one that’s been in the theme since the beginning. He has blue skin with a large orange beard and magenta beads that are molded around his neck. His accessory is his staff.
Athough not a minifigure, Sandy’s cat Mo is also in this set. He has the same color scheme and hairstyle as Sandy.
Build
Before we get to the Dronecopter itself, there are a lot of smaller builds that are also in the set. First is Red Son’s flyer which a juiced-up surfboard with some thrusters on the back.
Mo also gets his own ship with a cat-box-shaped flyer. It has enough room for Mo to fit inside and the sides have some thrusters.
Lastly, there are two spider drones. One of them has a blaster on the top while the other has binoculars.
The first shipping container features a living area with the top level having a bunk bed while the lower has a room with a desk and guitar.
The other container is the same size but it opens up sideways and it has little arcade machine as well as a control panel and a chair. Looking at the decorations, I assume that this whole area is for Mei.
The Spider brood also has their own container that is fitted with a spring-loaded spider poison cannon. It activates by pushing on the levers on the back of the container.
On to the Dronecopter, the frame is made up of mainly Technic parts due to the nature of the vehicle. The middle uses a turntable piece for the turret on top later on.
The front of the ship is able to detach to give Monkie Kid his own little vehicle. It is secured using a couple of ball joints.
The four areas of the rotors are the exact same build and the middle has some propellers surrounded by some teal quarter-circle pieces. The two ends are decorated with stickers.
The last part of the build is the rotating turret on the top. The gears work in conjunction with each other and you can rotate the turret by turning the back gear on the handle.
The turret also has a couple of spring-loaded missiles by pulling the trigger on the bottom of the handle. I will say that it works very well and is also extremely sensitive. I had a few errand shots just holding by the Dronecopter and accidentally hitting the trigger.
The Dronecopter is able to hold the two containers by clipping them to the sides which makes the whole ship look fuller. Without them, it’s very skinny on the sides.
Results
Overall the LEGO Monkie Kid Monkie Kid’s Team Dronecopter (80023) has a lot of playability but it is a little bland because of the four propeller areas. It maybe to bit too heavy for younger kids to hold by the handle if everything is attached to it. A majority of the minifigures included are from other sets and aren’t unique. The smaller builds are decent and I do like Mei’s container with the arcade and recreation area.
