This past summer, LEGO released a flagship set for the new season of LEGO Ninjago: Dragons Rising with the Ninjago City Markets (71799). This set comes in at 6,163 pieces and retails for $369.99. I will say beforehand that I am not the biggest Ninjago fan so if I miss or don’t mention some of the many sticker references, please forgive me.
Minifigures
With a set this size, it’s not surprising that it comes with a whopping 21 minifigures, 19 of which are exclusive to this set. The minifigures include Lloyd, Nya, Detective Zane, Blacksmith Kai, Urban Arin, Urban Sora, Miss Demeanor, Hounddog McBrag, Chamille, Dareth, Cyrus Borg, Racer Seven, Gayle Gossip, Vinny Folson, Sushimi Chef, Baker, Boat Vendor, Street Vendor, Borg Store Employee, Tea Vendor, and Dojo Kid.
Lloyd is in his green ninja outfit from the new season. The torso has some metallic gold detailing on both sides with the front showing the green ninja symbol. The sword sheath also doubles up as the lower part of the mask. There’s a helmet that is used for the top of the mask. His double-sided head shows him with a normal face on one side and the other has a black mask covering his eyes. His accessories include some swords.
Nya is also in her new outfit for Dragons Rising and everything almost looks exactly like Lloyd with some differences in the torso and leg printing. Her double-sided head also has one side with the black mask over the eyes.
Detective Zane has a full gray color scheme for the coat and pants. I do wish the legs had some printing on it so it wouldn’t look so bland down there. His head shows him with a confused smile and a gray hat completes his look. His accessory is a magnifying glass.
Blacksmith Kai has on a brown shop apron that has printing going down to the legs. His double-sided head shows him with a determined expression on one side and a nervous smile on the other. His accessories include a hammer and a freshly forged translucent orange sword.
Urban Arin has one an flame orange shirt with a dragon wrapping from the front to the back. He has a single-sided head showing a smirking expression. His accessory is a printed waffle tile.
Urban Sora has on a white outfit with very detailed printing on both sides of the torso. The back has a large cat head in the middle. The left arm is fully covered with Imperium armor. Her double-sided head shows her with a smirk on one side and an angry expression on the other. Both sides have whisker-like markings on the cheeks to show her status as an Imperium. Her accessories include a printed food carton and some chopsticks.
Miss Demeanor has on a dark gray outfit with some red flames going around the torso. She wears a tank that is used for her dual flamethrower. Her head shows her wearing some red goggles and has an angry expression along with a red mohawk.
Hounddog McBrag has on his gray vest underneath the brown leather jacket. The torso also has printing of his badge on a chain. His double-sided head shows him with a mustache and mutton chops and has stern and angry expressions. His accessory is a pair of handcuffs.
Chamille has on a purple outfit that has metallic silver stars on the torso and legs. She has a single-sided head showing a smirk and has large purple rocker hair. Her accessory includes a pair of scissors.
Dareth has on a white collared shirt with brown suspenders. The front of the torso also shows him wearing a gold star chain. His double-sided head shows him smiling on one side and singing on the other. His accessories include a glass and a white bandage piece that doubles up as a towel.
Cyrus Borg has on a black shirt under a gray jacket and has black pants. One of his hands is black robotic due to his OverBorg form. He has a single-sided head showing a smirk. He does sit in a wheelchair.
Racer Seven seems to be a BIONICLE fan as wears a black sweater with Tahu in the front and the BIONICLE logo on the back. She has a single-sided head showing a smile. Her accessories include a nanofigure of Tahu as well as a BIONICLE canister.
Gayle Gossip has on a pink jacket with matching purple pants. She has a double-sided head showing a smile on one side and a scared expression on the other. Her accessory is a microphone.
Vinny Folson wears a blue jacket with his name badge on the front and the NGTV News logo on the back. He has a single-sided head with a big smile. His accessory is a brick-built camera.
The Sushimi Chef wears a red shirt with a white apron showing Sushimi’s logo on both sides of the torso. He has a single-sided head showing a nervous expression. His accessory is a butcher knife.
The Baker wears your typical white uniform with red neckerchief. She has a double-sided head showing smiles on both sides. Her hair is molded on to the white hat. Her accessory is a whisk.
The Boat Vendor wears a sand-green outfit that has a wrap that goes on both sides of the torso. He has a single-sided head showing a smile and he wears a hearing aid. His accessory is a tan stick.
The Street Vendor wears a white shirt with some blue overalls. Her double-sided head shows her with smiles on both sides. Her accessory looks to be a jar of some sort.
The Borg Store Employee has on a blue Borg Store shirt that shows the logo and name badge. She has a double-sided head showing smiles on both sides. Her accessory is a printed tile of a cell phone showing tap to pay.
The Tea Vendor has on a white shirt with a blue dragon on both sides of the torso. He has a single-sided head showing a smile.
Finally we have the Dojo Kid who wears a red and white gi. She has a single-sided head showing a smile. My copy had a misprint on they eyes and the white on the pupils so it looks like she’s soulless. Her accessory is an ice cream cone.
Build
The Ninjago City Markets sits on two 32×32 baseplates which makes the build 64×32 studs and measures 20 in. x 10 in. x 18 in.
The layout sits on a plot of land that has water going around it. Some of the water goes in a little bit with a bridge going over it.
Starting on the left side, there’s a bakery that slides out to access the interior. An oven sits on the side and there’s a counter filled with pastries.
On the other side of the wall is a blacksmith shop with an anvil in the middle and some weapons and tools on the wall. The front of the shop has a sign on top of the entrance.
Above the blacksmith shop is a little office space with a desk and a clock on the wall.
The floor above the bakery is a small apartment building that has just enough space for a bed. This area also slides out from the side like with the bakery.
The platform above is for one of the stations for the cable car. One nice touch here is that LEGO implemented an accessible area for the disabled characters like Cyrus Borg. This is achieved by turning the Technic piece on the side that has the sticker.
The cable car can be between levels of the City Markets by turning the knob on the side. It takes quite a bit of turning to get from one side to another but it’s a fun little feature. To keep passengers safe, there’s also a drawbridge that be opened and closed by turning the wheel. The cable car ends on the lower level on the opposite end of the market.
The last shop in this area is the Borg Store which sits on two levels. The bottom level has a few electronics that can be purchased while the upper level has an office.
The back side of the Borg Store has an elevator that goes up to the second floor. The elevator locks by flipping the little knob to the right.
If you don’t want to use the cable car to get to the other side of Ninjago City Markets, there’s a walkway that connect both ends. Right in the middle is a torii which is the red Japanese-style gate.
On to the other side, there’s general store that is filled with merchandise. There are doors on either side so you can enter and exit the store from the front or on the side. Outside thheh store is a missing goat poster.
The floor right above is a small apartment for Arin and Sora which has some bunk beds.
Next up is Dareth’s karaoke club which has a mostly purple color scheme. Right in the middle is a counter with enough space for Dareth to stand in. The middle of the room has a small pool table and a jukebox in the corner. The back of the club has some stairs going down to the walkway on the backside of the City Markets.
The last area is the floor above the club which has a Sushi Hut restaurant and a bathroom on the opposite end. The sushi bar is a quaint little spot with a counter. I do like the octopus mascot on top of the roof.
The bathroom is probably the most funny part out of the whole build. At first glance, you just see a toilet but diving deeper, it is actually a functioning toilet. The “pipe” underneath the toilet runs behind the poster of the karaoke bar’s wall which ends on the side of the build. The one downside is that it’s pretty hard to get the poop tiles into the toilet because there’s limited room to access the bathroom itself.
At the floor level, there are some little shops and stand around the water as well. There’s one for the tea vendor which is just a table with a teapot and cup.
The back part has a market stall that is filled with produce. Alongside it is a boat with more produce in baskets.
Results
The LEGO Ninjago City Markets (71799) is a massive set with lots of details and play features and I wouldn’t expect anything less for a set this size. The price point is a bit on the high end and I do expect that the amount of minifigures included contributed to a good amount of it.
The fun factor is definitely there with the amount things to do around the whole set like the cable car but the most fun feature was for sure the working toilet. There was some negative space underneath the cable car track which could’ve been used for something.
Thank you to LEGO for sending in this set for me to review. The content above represents my own opinion and not the company. Review sets sent in does not guarantee a positive review.
