In my next review of the 2023 LEGO Ninjago sets, we check out Zane’s Ice Dragon Creature (71786). This set contains 973 pieces and retails for $99.99.
Minifigures
There are five minifigures in the set, Zane, Pixal, Bone King, Bone Knight, and Bone Warrior. Zane has on a white outfit that also shows off his robotics on his chest. His head shows him with an angry expression. His accessory is a gold sword.
Pixal has a really detailed look on both the torso and legs. Her core look is a more updated version of the Samurai X outfit with more armor. She does have a double-sided head with a smile on one side and a stern look on the other. Her accessory is a sword.
Bone King is the same minifigure as in other 2023 sets with his red outfit with some chains going down the torso. He wears the kabuto hat with the crossbones datemono. His accessory is a bone sword.
The Bone Knight has even ore chains on the torso. It does have a extra lower jaw piece to make it look menacing. He wears a shoulder armor that allows a clip to be on the back which lets it carry the Green Bone Warriors flag. It also has a bone axe as an accessory.
Lastly we have the Bone Warrior who has the bandage wrappings around the torso. It has a bone sai as an accessory.
Build
There are a few things involved in the overall build. First is the bone crab robot thing with a spring loaded missile. The other small build is the bone temple area. These two builds don’t really add much to the play value as they are tiny compared to the Ice Dragon.
As for the Ice Dragon itself, it is very much larger than the other two builds. It has a white and light blue color scheme with some pearl-gold for the toes, horns, and wings.
The range of movement on it is very good as it uses ball joints and ratchet joints for prett much every moveable part of the body. Instead of having just two sets of legs, it has an additional one in the middle. The leg ratchet joints connect to the body while ball joints are used for the ankles. This allows the dragon to have more stability while also be flexible for some movement.
The head is printed and the neck is on a ball joint while the outh is on hinges. This is typical with some of the other creatures in this wave.
The tail sections are on ball joints with a large sword piece at the end.
The wings are also on ball joints and the outer parts are clipped on.
Behind the saddle are a couple of stickered banners.
One negative thing to note is that some of the parts are fragile. I’ve had a number of pieces just fall off while I was handling it. This includes the toes, the scales on the back, and some pieces on the legs. The inner part of the wings also tend to fall off as they are only clipped on.
Since the Ice Dragon Creature is a 2 in 1 set, you can also build the dragon warrior. The only thing is that if you already built the dragon, you’ll have to take it apart to build the warrior. This involves using the bricks from all nine bags. I didn’t have time to rebuild it but you can check out what it looks out below.
Results
Overall, the LEGO Ninjago Zane’s Ice Dragon Creature (71786) is a good set that keeps kids engaged. The dragon is a decent size and has good poseability. The 2-in-1 aspect gives more playability as you can buil two different models although they look somewhat close to each other, just one is standing upright. Even though the dragon looks cool, it’s very fragile as I stated above. Handling it can result in multiple pieces falling off at the same time.
Thank you to LEGO for sending in this set for me to review. The content above represents my own opinion and not the company. Review sets sent in does not guarantee a positive review.
