With the Chinese/Lunar New Year just a few days away, LEGO has recently released some Spring Festival sets and the first one we’ll be checking out is the Good Fortune (80117). The set has 1,021 pieces and retails for $89.99.
Build
The whole build pretty much sits on a 16×16 plate. You can’t really see it later on but there’s a very intricate design made up of pearl-gold curves. There are some jumper plates and turntables for the various objects in the set.
The first of the objects are the three gold ingots. All three are exactly the same and the resemble the yuanbao used as currency during Imperial China. In present day, Chinese use it as a symbol of wealth and prosperity.
The next object is the persimmon fruit that is place in the middle of the build. It is actually made up of three sections that are stacked on top of each other. It doesn’t sit too well and it tends to roll around.
Following that we have the unrolled red scroll. It is made up of a lot of plates with the middle part showing 春 which means Spring. The right side of the scroll has some brackets to give the illusion of it being rolled out. The calligraphy pen is made up of a bunch of Technic axle connectors and is clipped on to the top part of the scroll.
The fourth item in this set is the blue and white porcelain vase. It is built symmetrically using some arch bricks on hinge bricks to get the curve on the sides. The faces of the vase uses some printed dishes for the floral design. Sitting “inside” the vase is a pair of fortune red fruit. Hanging on the branches are some printed banners. One of them say 春暖花開 which means spring is warm and flowers are blooming. The other says 喜上枝頭 which translates to happiness on the branches.
The last part of the build is the red fan. It’s a very repetitive build as you build sections of the fan multiple times. At the end, there are two options on how to decorate it. The first is what I think is more appealing which is the branch with cherry blossom flowers that go across the fan. Perched on the branch are two blue magpies which represent happiness and good fortune. The Chinese word for magpie is 喜鹊 which literally translates to happiness bird. The final look has a 3D effect that I like. The other decoration is a more subtle look with pearl-gold curves and flowers.
Results
At the beginning of every year, I look forward to seeing the Spring Festival sets and the Good Fortune (80117) is the set I wanted the most. Even if LEGO didn’t send it for review, I would’ve purchased it anyways. The final display of the build looks pretty good although the persimmon tends to roll around since it doesn’t really attach to anything. I currently have it displayed at my house for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration and will probably keep it around afterwards.
The set is listed as a Build Together set so two people can build it at the same time. This would be a fun thing to do during Lunar New Year.
I will say there are some downsides to the set. The main thing is that it is fragile. A majority of the items tend to fall off the base. As I mentioned before, the persimmon likes to roll around because it’s not really attached to anything. The vase and the gold ingots are on jumper plates so one little touch can make them fall off. If you’re moving the set around to display it, I would suggest not putting anything on the base until the end.
Thank you to LEGO for sending in this set for me to review. The content above represents my own opinion and not the company. Review sets sent in does not guarantee a positive review.
