2023 marks the 40th anniversary of Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi and to celebrate the May the 4th event, LEGO will be releasing the Death Star II (40591) as a promotion. You will be able to get the 289 piece set from May 1-7 with purchases of $150 in LEGO Star Wars.
The whole build uses two sets of numbered bags. The first set of bags, you create the frame of the Death Star. You have the base that the Death Star sits on along with about a third of the structure itself. One thing you’ll notice right off the bat is that you’ll be building similar sections for a majority of the set. Here you will also build the unfinished area of the space station.
The second set of bags, you have the various panels that cover up the rest of the Death Star. Here is where you build many of the same sections that attach to the pins or clip to the sides. To cover up the upper and lower areas, wedge panels are uses to achieve that.
In one of the openings, you have an area for the superlaser powering up. The use of a three flower stem piece gives it that look with some translucent pieces for the laser itself.
Lastly, we have the printed brick with a silver metallic design of Darth Vader and the 40th annniversary of Return of the Jedi. It attaches to the spinning plate below the Death Star.
Overall, the LEGO Star Wars Death Star II (40591) is just an okay set although it does look nice as a display piece. Since it’s a sphere, you’ll build many of the same things which lowers the enjoyability of building the set.
If you’re comparing it to last year’s promo of the Homestead Kitchen (40531), it seem like a better promotion since you get more pieces at a slightly cheaper price requirement. I’m kind of surprised that it doesn’t come with some sort of minifigure.
Thank you to LEGO for sending in this set for me to review. The content above represents my own opinion and not the company. Review sets sent in does not guarantee a positive review.
