I’m a few weeks late but here is my short review of the July 2015 LEGO Monthly Mini Build, the Whale (40132). This month’s event was the first one after the new registration changes were implemented in June. You can no longer do walkups to have your child(ren) build but instead you register and get on the list to build at a specific time. If you miss your time, then your spot may be given away at the store’s discretion and there are no rainchecks. I heard from attendees that the signups were pretty crazy and times spots filled up very quickly, pretty similar to SDCC signups but on a smaller level.
The whale itself is the smallest for 2015 so far coming in at only 31 pieces. The build is pretty straightforward with no special techniques and extremely easy to create even for younger children. Although the set is only named a whale, the shape of it is similar to a humpback. On top of the whale, there is a simulation of watching coming out of their blowhole. The tail is able to move up and down on the hinge.
Again to attend these LEGO Monthly Mini Builds, you have to register online. At the time of this review, registration for August’s build, the Squirrel (40133), is probably filled up but you can try and sign up. I can’t guarantee that there will still be any spots open because these events are that are that popular. I believe registration for September’s build will be the morning of August 4th at 9:00am EST/6:00am PST so set your alarms. There’s no word yet on what September’s build is at this time.
