In the final set of the initial wave of the LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sets, we have the Turtle Lair Attack (79103). The Turtles’ humble abode is being invaded by the Foot and the have to stop them. The set contains 488 pieces and retails for $49.99. There are two instruction booklets, four numbered bags, and one sticker sheet.
Minifigures
There are five minifigures in the set: Leonardo, Raphael, Master Splinter, a Dark Ninja, and a Foot Soldier. There is also a Shredder training dummy but LEGO did not count it as a minifigure.
Leonardo is the same minifigure as in the Shellraiser Street Chase except that he has a frowning expression. Again, he has two katanas as his accessories. Another accessory that Leonardo has is his blue skateboard.
Raphael is in his third set of this wave of Ninja Turtle sets, the most out of any of the turtles. In this version, he has an angry expression with clenched teeth. Raphael has two sais as his weapons. He also has a red skateboard to ride on.
Master Splinter, otherwise known as Hamato Yoshi, is the teacher of the Ninja Turtles. The head is a new mold exclusive for this set. It is brown with pointed ears and has white eyebrows and beard. He wears a red kimono with a larger sloped brick for the leg. There are some flower printing on the leg piece. Splinter’s accessory is also a katana.
The mysterious Dark Ninja is Shredder’s apprentice who shows up to help Shredder destroy the turtles. his real name is Chris Bradford and Michelangelo tries to be friends with him but later finds out that he works for Shredder. Bradford later mutates to Dogpound which is in the Shellraiser Street Chase set. In this version, he wears a red jumpsuit with a black ninja mask. He has two dark katanas as his weapons.
The last official minifigure is the Foot Soldier. Yea, he’s the same one we’ve seen before. His accessories are a gold shuriken and a scythe.
The last “minifigure” is a Shredder dummy with short legs. The whole minifigure is brown colored and has a brown staff as the practice weapon.
Build
The build part of the set contains the actual lair as well as little builds that add more detail to the lair. The instructions first tell you to build a television stand with chairs for each of the turtles. The screen only shows an alleyway. Next is a small half-pipe ramp with a bar on top to pose some minifigures on. The final small build of the set is just a small catapult to launch the Dark Ninja.
The main part of the build is the actual sewer lair. It is three levels high and two levels wide. The highest level is the street level. There are some details there including a fire hydrant, a wall with sticker graffiti, a light pole, and a manhole that is able to open up.
The level below that has tool bench with a crane. On the opposite side is a place where you can place the skateboards. Right in the middle of this level is a pizza oven that can shoot out a pizza piece.
On the bottom level of the lair is a destroy-able wall which shows some blueprints of Donatello’s inventions. There is a rack with what looks to be some ooze canisters and spray paint cans. There is also a control panel thing with drawers that opens and a microscope. On one of the pillars are some wooden stairs that are stickers. On the other side of the back wall is a stick of dynamite that works with a Technic piece to “blow” out the wall.
The other lower level of the sewer is the training area which attaches to the main part of the lair. The trainin Shredder dummy stands in the middle and two on each side. The dummy can spin around using a simple Technic pin. There are also some trees as well, which is Splinter’s area.
Results
If you’ve ever watched the animated series on Cartoon Network, then you can tell that the LEGO version of the turtle lair looks very similar to the cartoon version. What’s neat about the lair is the detailing that LEGO put in such as the long translucent green pieces to make it look like dripping ooze. There are plenty of play features to keep you entertained for while. Plus, this is the only way to get Splinter minifigure so if you want a complete set of the heroes, you probably have to get this set unless you go on the secondary market.
