LEGO CUUSOO Updated Guidelines, House Rules, and Terms of Service

Today, LEGO CUUSOO has posted a major update to most of their Guidelines, House Rules, and Terms of Service. The goal of these changes is a quicker turnaround during the Review Stage and LEGO can produce the products faster. Before the changes, LEGO has been fairly lenient on what they accepted as a project for submission. That will all be changed starting today.

Brick-Based Construction Toy Projects Only – You will only be able to create projects that use standard LEGO parts.
One Project = One LEGO Set – No more series of projects. The exception is the LEGO Minecraft theme due to contractual agreement with MOJANG.
No Minifigure Series or “Battle Packs” – Pretty much what it says, no more minifigure projects. You will need an actual set to go with those minifigures.
Only Use Authentic LEGO Parts – No more non-LEGO brand parts aka Mega Bloks, K’Nex.
No Company Logos or Team Mascots – No more using other brand’s logos and/or mascots as the theme of your project.
Please Don’t Use Our Logos – Again, pretty much what it says. No more using the LEGO logo even on the mock-ups.

There are many projects at are currently supported that violate these new rules and restrictions. LEGO states that many of the existing projects that are violating the rules won’t be considered anymore. Many of these projects will be removed in the near future. LEGO CUUSOO Projects To Actual LEGO Products

If you’re new to LEGO CUUSOO and wondered how a particular project goes from the idea stage to an actual product, ReBrick has recently done an article with LEGO Group Head of Community Business/Busniess Manager Daiva Naldal to explain how the process goes. After a project gets 10,000 supporters, it heads to the LEGO Jury/Review Board which consists of people from different departments:

“It consists of different people who represent different departments within The LEGO Group, to make sure that we have a decent and proper evaluation of each idea. We have LEGO Designers and people from our main markets,- like Sales and Marketing people, who will then be responsible to validate the sales potential. We also have representatives from our Brand Management Team, securing that the projects fit our Brand guidelines. And we have a close relationship to License and Legal, as well as Product Development Teams. So we get insights from all teams in order to make the final decision.”

Daiva also explains that many projects aren’t selected to become actual products not because the designers don’t like it but the company has to look at different aspects to make a decision. One aspect is to get a licence from the original IP. You may have seen that there have been a lot of projects on CUUSOO that have reached the review stage that require a license to use the particular theme.

LEGO CUUSOO The Adventure Time Project Achieves 10,000 Supporters

The Adventure Time Project by jazlecraz now becomes the latest project to hit 10,000 supporters on LEGO CUUSOO. The set features a micro-scale Tree Fort and includes various notable characters of the show such as Finn, Jake, BMO, Ice King, Princess Bubblegum and Marceline. If you haven’t heard of Adventure Time, it is an animated TV series that takes you through the adventures of Finn and Jake. The show does feature a little bit of controversy but it is geared towards kids. Whether it is suitable for LEGO’s core audience and guidelines, that is up for the the LEGO Jury to decide in the Winter 2013 Review Stage. Congratulations to jazlecraz for the achievement! LEGO CUUSOO Back to the Future Griff’s Hover BMW

Team BTTF is back with another project that is listed on LEGO CUUSOO. Today, the team has posted Griff’s Hover BMW which is from Back to the Future II and was seen parked in front of the Cafe 80’s. The model of the car is a modified is a BMW 633CSi and is six studs wide. The project also includes Griff Tannen and his gang of Spike, Whitey, and Data. The minifigures include accessories such as their hover boards like the Pit Bull that Griff uses. Again, the model was created by Sakuretsu and be sure to check out Team BTTF’s other projects on CUUSOO.

LEGO CUUSOO Japanese Old Style Architecture Achieves 10,000 Supporters

The Japanese Old Style Architecture by Taxon55 has achieved 10,000 supporters on LEGO CUUSOO. The project was one of the first sets that were posted on CUUSOO way back in 2011 and it now reaches the Winter 2013 Review Stage. The project uses various building techniques to recreate structures that personify the essense of Japan such as the shrines and hot springs.

The Japanese Old Style Architecture joins the Legend of Zelda: Iron Knuckle Encounter as the second project to reach the Winter 2013 Review Stage. Congratulations to Taxon55 for this achievement!

LEGO CUUSOO Legend of Zelda Iron Knuckle Encounter Hits 10k Supporters

The latest project to hit 10,000 supporters on LEGO CUUSOO is the Legend of Zelda: Iron Knuckle Encounter by Wes Talbott. The set features Link running into the Iron Knuckle in a very nice looking playset filled with little trinkets as well as breakable pillars much like in the Ocarina Of Time.

CUUSOO has had a couple of Legend of Zelda sets reach the Review Stage but were eventually turned down, most likely with the IP issue. Even Wes in the comments section stated that his project may not be chosen as an official set but it doesn’t take away from the fact that it has a fairly large number of supporters. We’ll just have to see what happens when the Winter 2013 results are out. Congratualations to Wes for this amazing achievement!

Huge congratulations to WesTalbott and all of the supporters of this LEGO® CUUSOO project. This is now the third project based on the Legend of Zelda to reach 10,000 supporters, so it’s very clear to us that LEGO and Zelda fans worldwide really want to see this happen.

Even though we haven’t been able to move forward with the past two Legend of Zelda proejcts, our team is happy to consider this project in the Winter 2013 LEGO Review period on its own merits.

LEGO CUUSOO Winter 2012, Spring, and Summer 2013 Results Announced

Tim Courtney has just announced the results of three LEGO CUUSOO review panels which includes projects from Winter 2012, Spring and Summer 2013 and the latest model to become an official set is the Exo Suit by Peter Reid. The Land Rover Defender 110 by Sheepo is still being evaluated and a decision has not been reached yet.

The projects that have been rejected are the Thinking with Portals, Purdue Pete, Space Troopers!, Andy/Bugdroid the Android by Google, Legend of Zelda, Mini Shop Series, Batmobile Tumbler Minifig Scale, and the League of Legends of LEGO: The Raid on Baron Nashor.

The Exo Suit is the first set chosen that does not have an IP behind it and will be available in stores in the middle of 2014. The Fall 2013 review process is already underway and the projects that are being evaluated are Female Minifigure Set, Poptropica: Dr. Hare’s Lair, FTL – Faster Than Light, The Road to Oz, ATLAS Mini Model Education Outreach, Ghostbusters, and Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary. The results of those projects will be available early 2014. Congratulations to Peter for this achievement! What do you think of LEGO’s decision of the Exo-Suit becoming an official set?
