Yesterday’s announcement of the LEGO Icons The Lord of the Rings: The Shire (10354) may have given a hint to the future of the LOTR theme. Towards the end of the press release, there was a curious statement which read:
A true collector’s item that completes the trilogy of sets, following previous Barad-dûr™ and Rivendell™ launches, the LEGO Icons The Lord of the Rings: The Shire set is a testament to the enduring power of friendship, adventure, and the magic of Middle-earth™.
This latest set seems to suggest that this will be it for The Lord of the Rings theme for the Icons line following Rivendell (10316) and Barad-dur (10333). I can’t imagine LEGO being done after just three sets as there’s still many more locations that they could do such as Khazad-dum/Mines of Moria, Gondor/Minas Tirith, or Helm’s Deep. They also also shift to large scale character builds like the Balrog, an Oliphaunt, a Fell Beast, or even Smaug. Either way, we’ll just have to see what LEGO has planned for the future of The Lord of the Rings.
