I’m a bit late to the game but I’ve finally got my review set for The LEGO Movie 2 Collectible Minifigures (71023) to check out. There are a total of 20 minifigures to collect in this wave and each character has a tie-in to the movie. They are currently widely available at major retailers around the world.
Like with previous Collectible Minifigures series, each box contains 60 packets and if you’ve been collecting for a while, you may notice there are some changes to this series. The packs themselves are a bit taller and wider than previous ones and they are similar in size to the Unikitty series. Although we were afraid the minifigures were going to be harder to feel for, the materials of the packets made it a bit easier to feel through.
In addition, there are a few characters that are double bagged and they include Crayon Girl, Hula Lula, The Swamp Creature, Kitty Pop, Dorothy Gale and Toto, and Cowardly Lion. I’m not sure why LEGO decided these characters had to be double bagged but they are.
As confirmed with numerous other reports, the the majority of the minifigure distribution comes in at three complete sets per unopened box. In a bigger surprise, most boxes will have a complete set of 20 per row which I’ve reported before. That doesn’t mean each row is guaranteed a set so you’ll have to loosely feel to see. I can not confirm with my box since LEGO didn’t send the minifigures in a sealed box like they used to but dumped everything into a shipping box however I can confirm that I did get three complete sets. I guess they just opened a box and put everything in and shipped it my way.
Before we jump into the character reviews, I will note that each minifigure comes with a white stand.
Remix Emmet
Emmet is similar to his other variants except that this version of him has a wide smile and a closed eye smile. His hairpiece comes with a pair of headphones molded on to it. His accessories include a printed 1×2 tile of his cell phone and an unprinted coffee cup.
Battle-Ready Lucy
Lucy is seen wearing her usual black hoodie with the pink and blue highlights on the front and back of the torso. Her legs show her with some dark-brown pants with black boots. She does have a black quiver but interestingly, she is missing a bow to use the arrows. She has a double-sided head with a smile on one side and an angry look on the other. The brown hood also has the goggles molded on to it. Her accessory is a pair of binoculars.
Apocalypse Benny
Benny looks similar to he other variants except that his right arm is more robotic now. Like before, he does have the faded Classic Space logo on the front of the torso. His double-sided head shows him with a happy smile on one side and an angry expression on the other. His accessory is a red tool box that has the Classic Space logo as well.
Giraffe Guy
I can’t help but feel that the Giraffe Guy is LEGO’s way to pay homage to Toys R Us’ Geoffrey the Giraffe. It may not be their reason why he was included but I dig it. Not surprisingly, this is my favorite minifigure as soon as images of the set became available due to me being a former TRU employee. I believe he is the tallest CMF to be made and he looks spot on as a giraffe with the orange spot throughout. He has a double-sided head with a smirk on one side and a wide smile on the other. His accessory is one of the newer leaf pieces.
Crayon Girl
The second costumed character in this series is the Crayon Girl who is dressed up as a purple crayon. The torso is plain lavender colored while the legs are dual-molded with darker purple boots. The large crayon piece that goes over her has some flowers printed around the top and bottom. She has a double-sided head with a smile on one side and hardy laugh on the other. Her accessory is a printed 2×2 tile of a drawn minifigure head.
Sherry Scratchen-Post & Scarfield
The events of the end of the first movie and the beginning of the second has changed everyone including Mrs. Scratchen-Post. As a result, she has now more fierce with her wearing a leather outfit with a feline printed on front of the torso. Her arms has some printing of armbands on both sides. She only has a single-sided head with an angry expression. Her accessory is one of her cats named Scarfield who has a mohawk.
Hula Lula
Hula Lula is one of the attendees at the Ceremonial Ceremony and is one of the singers at the event. She wears a lime green dress with flowers on the front and back of the torso. She has on some magenta shorts which is covered up by the grass skirt. She has a double-sided head with with two slightly different smiles. The hairpiece is a lime green ponytail with a pink streak on the front. Her accessories include a 2×2 printed record and a magenta microphone.
Watermelon Dude
The last costumed minifigure is the Watermelon Dude. He wears a short-sleeved dark green shirt and some white pants with pink boots. The watermelon slice that goes over his body shows some seeds on both sides of it. His double-sided head shows him with a smirky smile on one side and the other shows him with some sunglasses. His accessory is a 1×1 printed quarter-circle watermelon slice.
Flashback Lucy
Flashback Lucy is what Lucy was before she became Wyldstyle. She has on a blue outfit with bubbles throughout. Her double-sided head shows her with a smile and a singing expression. Her hairpiece is the same mold as before but it now shows her true hair color with the light blue with purple streaks. Her accessories include a printed 2×3 gold record of Everything is Awesome and a magenta microphone.
Swamp Creature
The Swamp Creature has a lime green torso with a skull tattoo on the chest. He is also seen wearing some leather suspenders. The head and mask piece is the same as from the one in the Monster Fighters line. His accessory is a brown whip.
Candy Rapper
Candy Rapper wears a striped dress that is pink and white with some orange. The skirt piece has some printing of stars going around it. Her double-sided head shows her with a smile on one side and a winking smile on the other. Her accessories include a printed 1×2 trans-clear cassette tape and a magenta microphone.
Gone Golfin’ President Business
President Business shows up for a short time at the beginning and at the end of the movie. He wears a green sweater-vest over a white short-sleeved shirt. His legs are dual-molded with some plaid pants and dark green boots. His double-sided head shows him with a smile on one side and a worried look on the other. The hairpiece is the same one as the one from the first movie. His accessory is a new golf club.
Apocalypseburg Abe
Like with the other citizens of Apocalypseburg, the war changed people and even the humble Abe Lincoln became more rough. He now has a more steampunky look to him which includes a skull and axe crossbones on the back of his torso. He has a double-sided head with a mellow look on one side and an angry expression on the other. His beard is molded on to his top hat which also has his goggles molded on as well.
Vest Friend Rex
Emmet’s alter ego Rex has on a dark blue outfit similar to what Emmet’s uniform. His legs are dual-molded with some brown chaps going over his pants. His double-sided head shows him with a cocky smile on one side and a smug look on the other. His dark blue cowboy hat also has some of his hair molded on. His accessory is a dark blue baby velociraptor.
Kitty Pop
Kitty Pop has on a pink outfit with some leopard spots on the torso and legs. Her hair piece is the same on as Catwoman’s from the Classic Batcave (76052) sets except that it is now in a pink color. She has a double-sided head with a smile on one side and a singing expression on the other. Her accessories are a white electric guitar with some pink stripes and the magenta microphone.
Dorothy Gale and Toto
The first of the Wizard of Oz crew is Dorothy Gale and Toto. She is wearing her plaid blue dress with a shirt piece going around the legs. Speaking of her legs, they are dual-molded and her feet shows her iconic ruby slippers. She has a double-sided head with a happy smile on one side and a scared look on the other. Her braid hairpiece uses a soft rubber with some blue bows on the end. Her accessory is Toto which uses the terrier dog mold.
Cowardly Lion
The Cowardly Lion has a fairly plain look to him. He’s mostly nougat colored and there’s some printing of fur on the torso and legs. His double-sided head shows him with a smile and a sad expression. Going over his head and torso is the large mane piece. His accessory is a printed 1×2 trans-clear tile of the courage medal he got from the Wizard.
Scarecrow
The Scarecrow has on a tattered dark green torso with some dark brown legs. There’s also printing of some ropes going around the torso and down the legs. He only has a single-sided head with a smiling expression. His new hat piece also has a ribbon molded on to it. His accessory is a printed 2×2 tile of his Certificate of Achievement.
Tin Man
The last member of the Wizard of Oz crew is the Tin Man. His color scheme is mostly a flat silver. He has a silver bowtie that goes around his neck which is a new color for that piece. The funnel that goes on his head is slightly angled downwards. His accessories include a silver axe and a printed heart-shaped clock.
Unikitty
The minifigure in this series isn’t really a minifigure but a brick-built Unikitty. This variant of her is slightly different from the previous ones mainly in the facial expression. Other than that, there’s not that much going on with Unikitty.
Overall The LEGO Movie 2 Collectible Minifigures (71023) series is a pretty interesting one with a number of characters that you wouldn’t really expect to see in one of the sets. My favorite one is probably the Giraffe guy as well as the Wizard of Oz crew which are some popular ones among fans. There are also some questionable inclusions such as Emmet and Unikitty. Do we really need another of their variants even though they have been heavily featured in the sets and Unikitty in her series from last year?
Thank you to LEGO for sending in this set for me to review. The content above represents my own opinion and not the company. Review sets sent in does not guarantee a positive review.
